For those of you who want to beef up your distribution and circulation ...
Lauren Cooper from BigTop Newsstand Services will be presenting a workshop
called Stand and Deliver: Success with Newsstands and Subscriptions here in
Chicago on June 3--along with Jeremy Wieland, Circulation Director for Utne.
Lauren will talk about the qualities and strategies she sees magazines using
to increase their success on the newsstand, and Jeremy will speak from his
experience both with newsstand and subscriber-based circulation--what's
worked for Utne and what hasn't.
The workshop is part of a two-day Publishing Skills Track that IPA-Chicago
is sponsoring at the Community Media Workshop conference. The track includes
15 skill-building workshops for the independent press--such as Ad Sales for
National Publications, presented by Stephanie Gadlin of RJ Dale Advertising;
Redesigns and Launches with In These Times; and Developing New Writers with
Punk Planet and others. We've also helped program 50+ workshops on broader
media topics, such as Training the Media Workforce (with Charles Whitaker of
the Academy of Alternative Journalism at Medill), Arts and the Media,
Improving Coverage of Immigrant Issues, etc. We'll have Abby Scher from
IPA-New York and Chicago's own Ray Hanania running a training session on how
to produce quality election-year content.
I hope you'll join us. If you register by this Thursday, the two-day
conference is $170 for IPA members, including lunch. To register or learn
more about the overall conference, visit www.newstips.org. To learn more
about the IPA-Chicago workshops, visit: www.indypress.org.
