I'm about to veer precariously close to seriously overwhelming contemporary theoretical debates on
"rights centered consitutionalism" vs. "participatory democracy/democratic action." If you are at
all concerned about the relevance of these thoughts to this debate, I will refer you to lofty
texts by Habermas [some hot stuff about co-originality] or Bonnie Honig [who writes a fascinating
rejoinder to Habermas]...or I will tell you to read the section on "Structural Deficiences in
American Democracy" from Chapter 1 of my thesis which oh so nominally touches on this debate.
[how's that for the most pretentious opening ever...]
anyhow...to the point about the newswire...and editorial policy...
1. I had assumed that the existing editorial policy re: the newswire was not completely going to
be revised. I was hoping that we could just add the anti-personal attack/pro-substantive discourse
statement, rather than subject the entire policy to scrutiny.
2. You see, I'm increasingly torn over this whole "democratic action" thing--that is, if we decide
the entire newswire should be reevaluated, then we could end up with an editorial policy that is
far inferior to the existing one.
3. On the other hand, I can't imagine how I can self-legitimate an endorsement of leaving the
entire newswire editorial policy exactly how it is--because I see the need for democratic
action...in particular, new people have to have some sort of 'agency.'
Actually...I'm not sure if I'm setting this argument up in a readily accessable way. [Am I making
sense?]
4. A simple version of the problem: If the entire newswire editorial policy is able to be revised,
it is possible that the new editorial policy would be worse than the existing one. But, at the
same time, saying that the newswire editorial policy cannot be completely revised is denying new
people the opportuntity to contribute to the process of developing an editorial policy, which is
strangely enough, very similar to a rights centered constitution.
I'm really just trying to help.
[or...I just need to get back to school...maybe...]
