Dear Nitie,

Thank you for contacting us. The Indymedia network, launched in Seattle to
cover the WTO in 99, now comprises over 100 Independent Media Centers, all
with volunteer-run websites. The websites operate on a democratic "open
publishing" system supporting widespread civic journalism. The India and
Mumbai sites are the only two South Asian sites so far, though I think
there may be groups forming in Hyderabad and Nepal.

I don't know the organizers of those sites personally, but you can contact
the following for more information on mumbai.indymedia.org:
Sanjay Bhangar halfworm at postmark.net tel: 4945046 / 4921469

I'm not sure who is actively working on the India site--perhaps Sanjay can
point you in the right direction.

you might also be interested in checking out #2 of the Sarai Reader
(Amsterdam/NewDelhi) which discusses Indymedia in some detail.

Here also is some interesting information about a community radio station
in Andhra Pradesh: http://www.radiophony.com/html_files/oravakal.html

If I can be of more help to you, please contact me.

namaskar,

Jonathan
