IN TRIBUTE TO PHILIP BERRIGAN
1923 -2002
We will miss Philip Berrigan's voice of balance.
*************************************
Note: This song was first presented as a dedication to Roy Bourgeois, founder
of SOA Watch, who spent months in solitary as part of the movement to expose
the atrocities engendered by The School of the Americas at Fort Benning, GA,
a school documented for training terrorists.
Log onto the website of the SOA Watch for further info. (Soaw.org).
The song was inspired during one of Bourgeois' stints in solitary and refers
to all prisoners of conscience, of which Philip Berrigan was a stalwart
example.
THESE FOUR WALLS
These four walls are looking in to me,
And they whisper, "We have locked you in, but we have set you free."
And time stands still, when there's only time to be,
And these four walls keep a-lookin' in at me
And, at times, the blood of martyrs comes a-tricklin' down the walls,
And when the pool of red surrounds me, I could drown.
And then a peace will overwhelm me when that solitary voice
Reminds me of the purpose we have found.
And time stands still when there's only time to be.
And these four walls keep a-lookin' in at me.
And the rumbling sounds of a distant victory.
Yea, box a body in, boy
And set an idea free!
And I hear the trumpet blast, and all the walls come tumblin' down,
As we raise our hands in joy and victory,
As the voices of the masses join to bring the tyrant down
Yes, these four walls are here to strengthen me.
But at times the blood of martyrs comes a-tricklin' down the walls,
And when the pool of red surrounds me, I could drown,
And then a peace will overwhelm me when that solitary voice
Reminds me of the purpose we have found
These four walls
These four walls
These four walls

George Bush: "The terrorists will not be stopped by mercy or by conscience.
But they will be stopped. They will be stopped by the will and the might of
the United States of America."
