The May/June issue of CJR is in the mail today (a bit later than usual, to
allow for a thorough assessment of the press coverage of the war in Iraq).
Here is an early look at some highlights:

Our war package, Iraq’s Hard Lessons, includes the dramatic
behind-the-scenes story of how Newsday got their journalists out of Saddam’s
prison (http://www.cjr.org/year/03/3/olojede.asp), by Newsday’s Dele
Olojede, and John R. MacArthur’s hard look at the media’s ready acceptance
of the evidence that justified the march to Iraq
(http://www.cjr.org/year/03/3/macarthur.asp).

Also in the package: an exploration of the motives of war correspondents,
and a salute to the fourteen who died in Iraq; the firsthand experiences of
nine journalists who covered the war up close, including dispatches from
Anthony Shadid, John Burnett, and Michael Massing; and more.

In other news, Adeel Hassan moderates a debate between Ahmed Bouzid and Ira
Stoll about balance in Middle East coverage, and Liz Cox visits the Bias
Busters’ Ball.

PLUS: Jarhead’s Anthony H. Swofford reviews Susan Sontag’s latest; Jonathan
Knee argues that ending TV-newspaper cross-ownership rules may have little
effect; and Rhonda Roumani watches the war on Al-Jazeera and CNN.
