THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND: '60s Radicals Revisit a Tumultuous Era;
Movie Has U.S. Theatrical Premiere Wednesday, June 4 at New York's Film
Forum
Opens Nationally this Summer
Film Forum is pleased to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of Sam Green
and Bill Siegel¹s Sundance Festival hit, THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND, beginning
Wednesday, June 4. The film will roll out nationally beginning in July.
In 1969 a radical splinter group broke away from SDS (Students for a
Democratic Society), convinced that only militant action could end racism,
the war in Vietnam and the inequalities they felt inherent in a capitalist
society. Smart, well-educated and anxious for change, the Weather
Underground engaged in numerous bombings (and failed bombings) that landed
them on the FBI¹s Most Wanted list. They also broke Timothy Leary out of
prison. Today -- with many people again challenging US actions at home and
abroad -- former members as well as their critics look back on the '70s and
reflect on what they did and why they did it. THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND
received the Golden Gate Award for Best Documentary Feature at the 2003 San
Francisco International Film Festival.
THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND opens Wednesday, June 4 for an open-ended run at
Film Forum (W. Houston Street, W. of 6th Avenue), with screenings daily at
1:15, 3:15, 6, 8, and 10.
THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND features some of the best-known names from radical
circles, including: Bernardine Dohrn ("the most dangerous woman in America"
J. Edgar Hoover) and Bill Ayers (author of "Fugitive Days," a memoir
published just days before the events of 9/11), Kathleen Cleaver (a former
Black Panther and wife of Eldridge Cleaver) and Mark Rudd (leader of
Columbia University¹s student strike), as well as some new faces who offer
surprising accounts of their radical years: Naomi Jaffe (director of Holding
Our Own, an Albany-based foundation to promote feminist social change),
David Gilbert (currently serving a life sentence) and Brian Flanagan (a
winning contestant on "Jeopardy" and today the owner of a Manhattan bar).
Todd Gitlin, an SDS founder and noted social commentator, provides a
spirited attack æ from the left æ on the Weather Underground¹s effect on
more moderate left-wing efforts to take on some of the same powers that be.
THE WEATHER UNDERGROUND (2003, 92 mins.) Directed by Sam Green and Bill
Siegel. Produced by Sam Green, Carrie Lozano, Bill Siegel, Mark Smolowitz.
Edited by Sam Green and Dawn Logsdon. Voice-over by Lili Taylor and Pamela
Z. Cinematography: Andy Black and Federico Salsano. Exec. Producers: Mary
Harron, Christian Ettinger, Sue Ellen MaCann. USA.
