BREAKING NEWS- A Great Show for A Great Cause
The Golden Girls: LIVE! (TGGL!) opened on August 16, 2003 for what was
supposed to be a few night loving tribute by four friends. However, the
show was so well received that many additional performances were added. At
this point in this breaking news piece you may be saying "I heard that the
show was great fun.". However, perhaps you didn't know that the creative
team raises money every night for a worthwhile cause.
TGGL! decided from the outset to raise money at each performance(as well as
give a portion of the cover proceeds) to help find a cure for Progressive
Supra-nuclear Palsy (PSP). This is a neurological disease that attacks
portions of the midbrain, or movement center, which controls balance and
speech. As the disease progresses, muscles may become rigid. Eventually most
patients are bedridden and need 24-hour care. Thee diesase has no known
cause and there is no cure. Patients are often given five to seven years to
live, although length of survival varies widely. Because of PSP's
nonspecific early symptoms, patients are often misdiagnosed with Parkinson's
disease or Alzheimer's disease. PSP's profile was raised when actor Dudley
Moore was diagnosed with the degenerative illness in 1998. Closer to the
show's heart is the fact that the disease has struck the brilliantly
talented Golden Girl - Estelle Getty. As such all money raised is to be
given to www.psp.org in Ms. Getty's name.
Since October is PSP awareness month the creative team of TGGL! wanted to
let you know by helping to get the word out about this insidious disease.
So come by Rose's Turn and see the show! If you don't have the time then
please stop by and pick up some PSP literature. We have made it available
in the lobby. For those who make donations over $10 PSP "Butterfly of Hope"
lapel pins are also available.
The Golden Girls: LIVE! (An All Male Loving Tribute) runs through December
28, 2003 at Upstair's at Rose's Turn (55 Grove Street). From 1985 to 1992,
millions of Americans tuned in to catch the loveable antics of Dorothy,
Blanche, Rose and Sophia. Now theyre back in their original Saturday night
timeslot, only this time, LIVE on stage! The 60-minute show is a loving
tribute to our favorite mostly gray haired gals with an ALL MALE cast. The
show features back-to-back episodes pulled from the scripts and flavor of
the original sitcom (ALA the separately produced surprise hit tribute to the
Brady Bunch). It will begin previews for an official Off-Broadway at
Dillon's (245 West 54th Street) on January 7, 2004. It's official opening
night is February 11, 2004. More information about the show is available at
