THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Oct. 17. Live worms were found in several bars of a popular brand of chocolate bought from a bakery at the Kedaram shopping complex at Kesavadasapuram here on Friday. 

As many as 35 chocolate bars in 25 gm packs had been bought by the staff of a private management consultancy firm at Pattom here to celebrate the birthday of their superior. 

Live worms crawled out from tiny holes on the chocolate bars when the foil wrappers were opened, the staff told The Hindu. By then, a few bars had been unknowingly consumed by some. 

Tiny holes were there on most of the bars, from which the pale brown-coloured worms emerged. The worms were almost the same colour as the chocolate and so they were not easily noticeable. 

The batch number `24 S 313' and the date of packaging, `June 2003', was stamped on the covers. The cover also said, `Best before 12 months from packaging'. The chocolate bars had been stored in a glass jar at the bakery. 

When contacted, an official of the mobile vigilance squad of the Prevention of Food Adulteration (PFA) division of the Directorate of Health Services said they had not seized any worm- infested chocolate samples from the city so far.
