Jonathan,
Our fearless leaders, Andrew Nachison and Dale Peskin, director and co-director of The Media Center, are truly fearless: With all the turmoil in the Middle East and just a few short days after the bombing in Pakistan last week, they still jetted off to participate in a major international event. They spent this week sharing their vision of the digital future at the World Editors' Forum/WAN 57th World Congress in Istanbul.
Andrew and Dale left us under attack by the 17-year, Brood X cicadas, which sound like an invasion of flying saucers. That loud hum outside and the perpetual thuds of cicada bodies against our 10-foot windows is actually pretty cool... as is the way our summer activities are shaping up:
1) The Digital Story Master Class: Advanced Content for the Online Audience, July 26-30, 2004, in Reston, Virginia
Some really hot interactive media producers will appear at this seminar. Check out their Web sites:
<http://www.musarium.com/> Musarium Publisher and Executive Editor Alan Dorow will lead a session on designing elegant online content.
<http://www.popularfront.com/> Popular Front Creative Director Laurence Brickner and John Casserta, visual designer from Yale University, will address the current state of online storytelling and critique online news efforts.
<http://www.pbs.org/> News and Documentaries Editor Amanda Hirsch and Interactive Director Theresa Riley share PBS's online strategy and discuss TV to Web content development.
<http://www.msnbc.msn.com/> MSNBC.com's deputy editor for creative media, Angela Clark, will lead a session on how to manage production teams to desired end results.
<http://www.newsgaming.com/> Gonzalo Frasca, creator of Newsgaming.com, will be coming in from Copenhagen to lead a session on playing the news.
<http://www.sil.si.edu/> A field trip to the Smithsonian Institution Libraries takes the seminar participants backstage where Digital Librarian Martin Kalfatovic will discuss online exhibitions and the creation of the Smithsonian's digital archives.
There will also be discussions about wireless content, award-winning packages from small newspapers and collaborative storytelling... All in all, a pretty inspiring program!
There are only a few seats remaining for this seminar, so if you're interested in joining but haven't done so already, please get your reservation in now.
The seminar will be co-hosted by Andrew Nachison and Nora Paul, director of the Institute for New Media Studies at the University of Minnesota.

2) Check out the latest issue of Synapse, our executive briefing on the trends and developments we see on the media horizon, is now online. The lead article in the latest issue is titled, "Make way for The Mobiles." <http://www.mediacenter.org/content/4478.cfm>
3) Look out for the results of the latest BIGresearch survey on simultaneous media usage, which will be released in the next two weeks. If you'll remember, the last survey revealed that 70% of media users use multiple forms of media at the same time. <http://www.mediacenter.org/content/3673.cfm>
4) Monetize the Web: The Zip-Boom-Bop Holy Cow Oh My God Ka-Ching Master Class, September 12-15, 2004, in San Francisco.
And looking ahead to the fall, stay tuned as we fill in the details for this seminar on how to make money on the Internet. So far, top executives from CBS Marketwatch, Knight Ridder Digital, Lee Enterprises, InfoWorld, PC World and SFGate are lined up to address such topics as: what makes a dot-com success; advertising that rocks; syndication and search engine revenue; search engine optimization and audience development; how to demonstrate online ROI; and new money-making opportunities and challenges. <http://mediacenter.org/04/MonetizeSF>
Do you have comments about our research? Tell us, we want to know! Will we see you at one of the above events? We hope so!
