ENGLISH:

Please consider this proposal from Chiapas Indymedia to produce a
multimedia memory and coverage on the 10 years of the Zapatista Movement.

The Zapatistas just celebrated 20 years since their clandestine formation
on the 17th of November and will celebrate 10 years since their armed
uprising on January 1st 2004.

PROPOSAL:

Chiapas Indymedia
20-10 Zapatista/Civil Society Dignified Memory

An Audio-Visual project for the collective memory of the 20-10 years of the
Zapatista struggle.

We are a collective of people working with the Independent Media Center in
San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas, united in the goal of compiling a
production on the experiences and reflections of the 10th anniversary of
the Zapatista uprising.

We will produce a collective memory, with the goal of promoting reflection
within the local population and the general populous about the process of
the indigenous Zapatista movement in their search for justice and dignity
through the construction of a self-determined autonomy.

Through this project, we intend to generate a dialogue that transmits the
personal experiences in the form of opinions, anecdotes, sentiments, and
memories of many zapatista related events throughout the last ten years. We
propose to create this dialogue through an audio-visual documentary (with
interviews, photos, text, audio, and other images). With this project we
hope to compile the reflections and personal memories of people who have
participated in this movement in San Cristóbal, principally those who have
participated outside of the public eyethe cooks in the kitchen during the
San Andrés dialogues, the taxi drivers who lent their cars so that the
insurgents could get from one place to another, or the people who
participated in the popular neighborhoods of Jovel, etc...

To facilitate the collection of materials, we’ve divided the 20-10 years of
the Zapatista struggle into the following periods: 1) The conception,
before 1994, 2) The uprising and the first twelve days of war, 3)
Encounters with civil society, dialogues and ruptures with the
governmentMarch 1994 to the breaking off of the dialogue in January of
1997, 4) The silenceJanuary of 1997 to December 2000, 5) The rejection of
the indigenous law and autonomy in action, (The March for Dignity in August
of 2003), 6) The birth of the Caracoles and the Juntas of Good Government,
7) The Future: what do we want, what do we dream, what do we wish for the
future?

We propose to interview people who have had different roles in distinct
moments throughout this decade, with the goal of portraying diverse sectors
of the population, and the perceptions of the people who have been witness
to some specific event during this process.

With the material that we gather, we are going to have a lot of work in
organizing and editing it (in the case of audio and putting together a
multimedia CD). For this reason, we have placed a time limit for receiving
submissions of the 20th of December. This is important so that we can
distribute this material before January first in the neighborhoods and
other public spaces in San Cristóbal de las Casas. Furthermore, we’re
interested in putting the material up on the web, so that it is available
to the general public, and so groups interested in commemorating the
10-20th anniversary of the EZLN can use it in their respective
celebrations. The final production will be projected in San Cristóbal in
public events on various neighborhoods on walls and outdoor spaces in a
series of public acts. This will also be distributed to all of the five
Caracoles in Zapatista territory for screenings in the autonomous
communities. The memory will be available on the Chiapas Indymedia site
for download around the world for those that express interest in the
Zapatista movement and the local

The Collective calculates that the creation of this project will cost a
total of $579. We expect to spend $79 for 50 VHS cassettes, $27 for 100
CD’s for making copies, $42 for printer ink and CD sleeves, $45 to pay for
transportation for our subjects to travel to and from interviews (10
interviews, $4.50 for each), $22 for the cost of internet use (30 hours)
and $35 for electricity in the office of Indymedia, and $329 for 5
presentations (at $13.50 a presentation) in each of 5 Caracoles. These
figures were calculated using the currant exchange rate of 11.4 pesos to
the dollar.
