Summary:

Proposal to fund the Latin American Server Connection to keep it running
for 12 months.

Proposal: Latin Server Connection

Like we’ve already informed, the server that hosts the majority of the
IMC websites (stallman.indymedia.org) is overloaded. So, the São Paulo
(CMI São Paulo) technical team made a proposal to the global technical
team, in order to require a server to the Latin American IMCs. With our
own server, we could decentralize the technical work in the Indymedia
network, sharing the server administration task with more people. This
would also give us autonomy to control our websites without using the
English language to discuss technical topics about our IMCs and we could
also guarantee that the Latin American IMC websites would always work.

When this proposal was made, in the end of 2001, there were few IMCs in
Latin America and there were not many techs in these IMCs, so there
wasn’t a Latin technical team. So, the São Paulo technical team, which
was already formed and had a great number of members, took the
responsibility of administrating this sever, making the proposal to the
global technical team. The global technical team donated $1380 dollars,
so the São Paulo technical team could buy a server and pay the
connection during six months. However, as the number of IMCs in Latin
America has increased a lot, the connection we could pay with this
amount of money, from the global technical team, would be not enough for
all the Latin American websites.

The server has already been bought and has an Athlon processor, with
1.1GHz, 1GB of RAM and 1 HD SCSI with 18GB.

The technical collective studied the possibilities of connection and the
advantages, disadvantages and prices, and decided to allocate the server
in a specialized company.

To allocate the server in a specialized company (Colocation)
Price: 12 installments of R$560 ($172)
Speed: 128 kbps (optical fibre)

The collectives decided the best way of keeping the server is in a
company. The collectives have only R$500 ($151), that is only enough for
one month of the service. The server is already functioning and on this
moment, some Latin America’s websites are being transferred to this server.

So, we are making the proposal to receive the donation of US$2064 from
IMC Finance, to keep the server during 12 months.
