For large ammounts i believe they charge 10%, plus a fee. It's a total
ripoff.

I am not planning on going right away to Porto Alegre. I'm first stopping
off for a while in Uruguay. I'm in New York, my bank is in California. It
takes 48 hours to do an inter bank transaction in the US. There is no way
i can get the money to take with me in the next 20 hours before my flight
leaves.

One option is we transfer some of the money to accounts in the US and then
take it out via the ATM. We may need to transfer the bare minimum via the
evil Western Union, and the rest can be done more affordable ways. I know
Lale from the Uruguay imc has a UK bank account from which she can
withdraw money from ATM machines.

This third option seems the best. Trying to get the minimum and then do
the rest in a slower but better way.
