Hey folks,
Mark from NYC IMC here. I've just talked to someone who's working with
investigative journalist Greg Palast (author of "The Best Democracy Money
Can Buy" and co-collaborator with Media Channel on the film "Counting on
Democracy" about the 2000 election theft).
Palast is interested in joining up with small IMCs to do benefit showings of
"Counting on Democracy" that local IMCs could use as a fundraiser. They'd
provide copies of the tape at cost (like $5) and then the local IMC can
sweep in all the door from a screening. In November, The Indypendent
(newspaper of NYC IMC) did the first NYC screening of the film and we took
in well over a thousand dollars. Now, Palast wants to stretch this out all
across the country, if IMCs are interested. This has real potential for
places where Palast is not going on his book tour -- he's doing in-person
benefits in those places.
It's basically a free copy of the tape and the local IMC needs to drum up a
venue and do the publicity.
Also, this is a great film about how 50,000+ minority voters were wiped off
the voter rolls in Florida in 2000, and how THIS swung the election, not
pregnant chads. As we go into a basically imperialist war in Iraq, it's
useful to remind people in our communities how this imperial president came
to power.
Can we get some discussion going over this? Are there IMCs that want to do
this for a fundraiser in the coming months? I'd like to see us get an
organized response to this offer. What do people think?
