Hello,
I should have sent this message months ago, but unfortunately I have been
quite busy with college and work and haven't been able to conciliate those
two things with Indymedia. So, all I can say is that I'm really sorry for
the delay and that I hope people won't look at that as a general lack of
responsibility from IMC Brasil.
This e-mail should account for the donation made from the IMC-Finance
working group to IMC Brasil in January, 2003. A summary of this request
can be found here:
http://lists.indymedia.org/pipermail/imc-finance/2003-January/001695.html
And the complete request can be found here:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-finance/2003-January/001666.html
I will divide this message in three parts: "Request A", "Request B" and
"Fund raising at the World Social Forum".
In sum, we received:
- from Request A (support for the IMC Brasil meeting and the WSF coverage):
US$3,630 (or R$12,087.90)
- from Request B (video projector for the Rio de Janeiro collective):
US$860 (or R$2,863.80)
- from fund raising during the WSF itself:
US$998.92 (or R$3,326.43)
The exchange rate at the time of the donation and fund raising was R$3.33
per dollar. Today, the exchange rate is R$2,86 per dollar. Through this
message I will use only the exchange rate from January (R$3.33 per dollar)
since it will give a more accurate idea of what we received and what we
spent.

Request B:
The Rio de Janeiro collective requested funds to buy a video projector. Due
to the difference in the dollar quotation from the day the request was made
to the day the funds were sent, the sum received in reais was as little bit
less than what we asked for. Between January 3rd and January 15th, dollar
devaluated R$0,17 and because of that, the collective received R$136.20 less
than expected. Since we had included an Emergency Fund on "Request A" and
since the video projector did not become any cheaper (it still costed about
R$3,000 or US$900), we thought it would be a good idea to use part of this
Emergency Fund to make it up for those R$136 the collective did not receive.
Even then, most of this Fund was left untouched (as you can see above).
So, the Rio de Janeiro collective received:
- from Request B: US$860
- from Request A's Emergency Fund: US$40.91
TOTAL: US$900.91 (or R$3,000)

Fund raising at the WSF:
Through fund raising we were able to collect US$998.93 (or R$3,326.43). Most
of this sum came from foreigner IMCistas who paid a symbolic fee (US$2-3
per day) to stay at the 'casa de Indymedia'.
Part of this money was spent as follows.
SPENT:
o Rest of the rent paid to the landlord: US$450.45
o Gas for the building: US$8.11
o Telephone line for the building: US$30.03
o Indymedia press cards: US$21.62
o Other minor expenses: US$42.65
TOTAL SPENT: US$552.86
LEFT: US$446.07 (or R$1.485,41)
________________________________________
So, summing up what was left from Request A and what was left from the fund
raising, we have:
- TOTAL LEFT: R$2,867.23
At the time the calculations above were made, at a exchange rate of R$3.33
per dollar, this sum was worth about US$861. But since then, the dollar has
been steadily devaluating. As I said, today the exchange rate is R$2,86 per
dollar. So, this same sum now is worth about US$1,002.53.
This money is still on a bank account here in Brasil and in name of the IMC
Brasil Network I would like to return it to the global fund to be once again
disbursed by the IMC-Finance working group.
We thank you all for the support and we hope that we have spent this money
according to the expectations of those who supported our request.
In solidarity,
Luis,
CMI Belo Horizonte, Brasil.
