--------------------------------------
1) COMING TO THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM
THE WORLD SOCIAL FORUM
The World Social Forum is a meeting of Movements, Unions, NGOs and Left
Political Parties which happens from January 23-28 2003 in Porto Alegre,
Brazil. It is a meeting parallel to and questioning the World Economic
Forum which happens the same period in the city of Davos, Switzerland. You
can find more information about the WSF at the website:
http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br
Parallel to the World Social Forum, there are alternative activities
taking place. Among them are the Anarchist Journeys, the Meeting of
Autonomous Movements (cmi.poa at terra.com.br) and the Hub Camp. You can
learn more about the Anarchist Journeys at:
http://www.fag.rg3.net/
And you can learn more about the Meeting of Autonomous Movements writing
to:
cmi.poa at terra.com.br
HOUSING
More than 100 thousand people are expected for the World Social Forum this
year. Housing during the meeting is thus a big problem. Right now, most of
the hotels are already booked and there are few options left. If you are
considering renting a hotel room, you better do it very soon. You can find
a list of hotels and travel agency managing reservations at:
http://www.forumsocialmundial.org.br/noticias_01.asp?cd_news=261
Besides the hotels, the organization of the Forum makes available a park
in Porto Alegre where the Youth Camp takes place. About 20 thousand people
are expected to the camp. Conditions at the Youth Camp are not very good,
but if you don't have a better option, you can bring a tend and a sleeping
bag and camp there. Information about the Youth Camp can be found at:
http://www.juventudefsm.org/
PRESS ACCREDITATION
The press accreditation can be done at the WSF website. If you register,
you can get a press card that allows you to go to interviews and press
conferences and supposedly gives you access to the press room. However,
this year (unlike the two previous World Social Forums) the organization
decided to make two press passes: one for mainstream press, giving them
full rights, and a different one to alternative press, which gives access
to press conferences but not to the press room (where you would have
internet access plus audio and video facilities).
The IMC Brasil network is protesting against this decision. We wrote an
open letter to the organizers of the WSF and we ask other Indymedia groups
to join our letter or to write another one to the organizers
(fsm2003-imprensa at uol.com.br). You can see our letter in portuguese and
its english translation at:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-wsf/2002-December/000301.htm
l
The press accreditation can be effectuated online at:
http://www.inscricoesfsm.rs.gov.br/content/index.php?novo_idioma=2&page=im
prensa&subpage
We still don't know how serious will be the differentiation between the
mainstream and alternative media at the WSF. But we believe that the more
noise we make, the more they will think before denying us access to the
press room. So, make your online registration at the link above but don't
forget to write them if you don't agree with their proposal.
2) INDYMEDIA STRUCTURE
WORK SPACE
We are studying the possibility of providing an alternative space for
imcists to work. Among the options available we can either rent a
cybercafe, rent a big house or rent the conference room of a hotel. Of
course we would also need to rent the necessary equipment (computers,
printers, scanners, etc). With such work space we could do our activities
and interact with imcists from all over the globe, besides being a good
place for activities outside the official WSF. We will be providing more
information and updates about all this possibilities as soon as we can.
(You can follow this and other WSF-related discussions at the imc-wsf
mailing list. Link bellow.)
Note: IMC Porto Alegre is making Indymedia press cards for the IMC
volunteers who will be at the WSF. If you are coming, please, send an
e-mail to cmi-poa at lists.indymedia.org with your name and stating from
which IMC you are from. This way, IMC POA volunteers can make a simple
Indymedia press card for you.
ORGANIZATION
We propose that all IMC volunteers be divided into 6 specific teams:
1. AUDIO TEAM that would take care of the webradio and of audio
productions in general
2. EDITORIAL TEAM responsible for the update of the main column features
3. PHOTO TEAM to take pictures :-)
4. PRINT TEAM responsible for the print projects that will be developed at
the WSF
5. TECH TEAM responsible for the computers and for tech coordination in
general
6. VIDEO TEAM to produce and edit images
If you work with a particular kind of media, we ask you to consider
bringing additional media to donate to imcists from the global south.
Audio MDs, Photo films and Video MDV tapes are very expensive and needed
by the southerners. Besides that, IMC Porto Alegre is currently trying to
establish a cybercafe at the city and they are in desperate need of
computers. The machines would only run free software and would be used to
help on many social projects already on development. If you happen to have
any old machines that you could bring down with you, please do so. Any
other kind of donation in equipment is welcome as well.
We have already set up a general discussion list for the WSF at:
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf
Plus, the specific teams lists at:
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-audio
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-editorial
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-photo
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-print
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-tech
http://lists.indymedia.org/listinfo/imc-wsf-video
We also propose that at the IMC room/space we have daily and quick
meetings of the teams to coordinate coverage, activities and the
management of the IMC space. Meetings could happen at 8 PM (teams'
meeting) and at 9PM (general meeting).
PROJECTS
Apart from the traditional coverage of audio, texts, photo and video,
other projects are being discussed:
VIDEOCONFERENCE: IMC Switzerland volunteers had an idea of doing a
videoconference between autonomous movements in Davos and Porto Alegre. We
want to do this at the Youth Camp, during one evening. Additionally, we
are considering to set up another videoconference between Naomi Klein and
Toni Negri. IMC Porto Alegre is studying the costs for this project.
VIDEO EXHIBITIONS: We intend to have daily video exhibitions during the
evening at the Youth Camp. If you or your collective want to present a
video at the World Social Forum, please contact Indymedia Rio de Janeiro
who's scheduling the videos:
rio at midiaindependente.org
WEBRADIO: We want to set a webradio to broadcast local news from Porto
Alegre, and also interviews and other materials produced by the audio
team. So far we are thinking about doing this in partnership with a free
radio, Rádio Muda. If there are more people interested in doing it, we can
do it by ourselves. Interested volunteers should join the imc-wsf-audio
list.
WORKSHOPS: The six teams (audio, editorial, photo, print, tech and video)
will be responsible to develop projects of workshops to be taught at the
WSF. If you have any ideas for workshops, please join one (or more than
one) of our teams lists and get more people to help you out.
