Activists from the International Campaign For Justice in Bhopal were
violently removed from the Union Carbide factory site and prevented from
containing and securing part of the hazardous waste left behind by UC that
is poisoning the groundwater of Bhopal. Satinath Sarangi, Nityanand
Jayaraman, Shailendra Yashwant, Ananth Padmanabhan and Adarsh Vansay were
beaten up and brought to the Shahjanabad police station. Over 120 other
local residents and activists who were attempting to make safe some of the
hazardous wastes with barrels and other containment equipment were also
arrested.
The activist have called upon Dow Chemicals, which has taken over Union
Carbide, to clean up the site and have called on the state government of
Madhya Pradesh and the central government to ensure that Dow cleans up
Bhopal. Today's violent police action reflects badly on the state's
commitment to deliver justice to the victims of the world's worst industrial
disaster.
Please urgently call and fax Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister of Madhya
Pradesh, asking for the immediate release of all those protesting against
Dow's inaction, and demand that the state government assist in the fight to
have Dow Chemicals clean up the Union Carbide factory site.
Digvijay Singh, Chief Minister, Madhya Pradesh,
Vallabh Bhavan, Bhopal.
