Hi, this would be great to move on to some Indymedia list. I know it is a
bit difficult to get to know the structure of indymedia as it seems quite
overwhelming at the beginning. Imc Scotland at its beginning somehow came
to use a yahoo list, too, because it seemed the easiest option, but after a
time, most people got to appreciate the setup of the indymedia lists much
more, especially when intrested volunteers sign-up to the list which they
can find much easier if it is listed on http://lists.indymedia.org and also
the open archive has helped out so often when trying to find contact
details and to see how the development of a group evolved and what
discussions were had.

About indymedia India, I am sorry but i think I can't be of much help here,
but of course I am interested in how the discussion develops and what the
outcome is.
Also it seems to me that a successfull indymedia works on 3 levels,
locally, nationally and globally. There is a fourth level sneaking in which
could be described as "continental" maybe. But it seems to me that
successfull IMCs work well because of physical local meetings where people
get to know each other and built trust and have fun developping their
intrests and exchanging knowledge. Therefore imcs which cover big areas
often have problems because of not enough physical meeetings. Sometimes as
seen with France, it might be best to try to build up city-Imcs instead of
national/network imcs as they are a bit easier to maintain. Basically,
sometimes such as in France or Russia or whereever, the only solution seemed
to be a collapse of the site to built up something new, but that could also
mean that new collectives grow and structure and organise differently, and
that this might be a more suitable setup for a particular area or so.

Concerning legal action, I would really hate to see this, especially if it
comes from a "lefty" position. I don't know if anybody explained to you
yet, that all people working at the indymedia on any level are volunteers,
nobody gets paid. That means that for all people involved they face a
conflict between sustaining their life by selling of their labour, spending
most of their time working and squeezing in imc workload whenever they can.
Or they don't work and then they might have time but often not the
resources they need.
So involvement basically depends on how much time people can spare to
maintain a project.
It is great to know you are willing to spend time, energy and enthusiasm in
building up and maintaining an imc.
Taking on workload is greatly appreciated by all the IMC collectives
(normally) and as always earns you respect of the global community.
But the reason that everybody is a volunteer is also one of the reasons why
it takes ages sometimes to deal with tricky issues or why it might take
longer till somebody gets back to you.
Basically you need a big amount of patience and persistence sometimes.
But it can be great fun if you get some friends and a collective together
to built up an Imc and to maintain it.
So I hope, although you might be initially motivated out of a bad
experience, that you and like-minded friends can channel this experience
into a successfull, appreciated and loved project as it is for us (at least
most of the time).

Basically Bouds recommendations about all the links and read ups are very
valid. Unfortunately a lot of reading has to be done in IMC :-)
That might have something to do that many IMC volunteers are so far away
from each other.
The nicest and most successfull thing is, if you get to know some IMC
volunteers of a neighbouring IMC to visit you or you to visit them and to
get an introduction and chat with them about stuff and organisation, that
often makes it a lot easier to get your head round stuff.

Sometimes, that doesn't even need to be the IMC closest to you.
Oh and something else I wanted to add, in my opinion for a functioning IMC
you would need at least 3 people (bare minimum!), one "techy" who must not
be a techy but is interested in tech stuff and in solving web and computer
problems and educates other people about how to make the most out of the
technology, one person watching and being concerned about the "editorial"
side of things and one person who can do design aspects. Well, that seems
to be the absolute minimum. Of course better is a working collective of at
least 10 or even more volunteers continously working on imc in some
aspects. And a big mass of volunteers who contribute irregularly but still
are helping quite a lot in total. And of course, the activists contributing
from a grassroots community to the newswire. Also, it is of advantage if
you have people who link up with the IMC community on every level
(local, national or regional; and global) and also a link up based on the
issues you might be interested in, may also of advantege (like
webstuff/radio/print/audio/video/techstuff, etc...)

so, hope this helps.
Ulla
