PEACE & NON VIOLENCE CONFERENCE
a report by Dr. Leo Rebello
The fifth International Conference on Peace and Non Violence (V ICPNA) =
was held in three phases from=20
23rd to 26th February, 2003, in Rajsamand (Rajasthan), on 27th February =
in Ahmedabad (Gujarat) and on=20
28th February, in Mumbai (Maharashtra). It was organised by Anuvrat =
Global Organization.
International delegates, some 50 of them from Canada, USA, UK, Russia, =
Croatia, Serbia, South Africa, South Korea,=20
Japan, Italy, Greece, along with about 400 Indians (including locals) =
attended the conference. The first part was held from=20
23rd to 26th February at Children's Peace Palace in Rajsamand, near =
Udaipur in Rajasthan.
The international delegates and some outstation delegates then joined a =
Peace Bus Rally (led by Dr. S.L.Gandhi of Jaipur
and self) on 26th February and visited Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram =
on 27th February -- the anniversary of Godhra carnage. Police =
bandobast, surprisingly, was minimal and everything was peaceful in =
Gujarat. =20
At Sabarmati Ashram, the delegates were taken through the rooms of =
Mahatma Gandhi, Kasturba Gandhi, Vinoba Bhave,=20
the Library and Pictorial Gallery. They bought books, meditated, and =
resolved to work for peace by adopting non-violence and non-cooperation =
in their daily lives. It was a resolute and unanimous voice against war =
mania and for world peace, sanity, safety, equality, justice and =
fairplay through a World Parliament.
Then we got into the three reserved compartments of Shatabadi Express =
on 27th February afternoon and reached Bombay around 10 PM. The train =
was called Peace Train and the three reserved compartments vibrated with =
Peace songs, plans and
resolutions for future action.
On 28th February, from 10 am to 12 noon, a concluding session was held =
at Terapanth Bhavan in Thakur Complex, Kandivali East, Bombay 400101, =
presided over by Acharya Mahapragyaji, the Chief Pontiff of Terapanth =
Jains and attended by over 10,000 of his disciples where the Rajsamand =
declaration was released. The said declaration was mooted jointly by =
Prof. R.P.Bhatnagar (Rajasthan), Prof. S.K.De (of Calcutta, now residing =
in USA) and Dr. Leo Rebello (Bombay); seconded by Ms Vana Jakic =
(Croatia), Maj.Gen.Kostas Konstantinidis (Greece) and Mr. Alfredo =
D'Angelo (Italy), and passed unanimously.
The Rajsamand declaration, inter alia, concentrated on No Aggression on =
Iraq or war anywhere, and pressed for a World Parliament to replace UNO, =
an Independent World Media to replace rotten networks like CNN which =
manipulated news, protection of Green planet, etc. To pressurise =
war-mongers like President George Bush to give up their bloody schemes =
like aggression on Iraq, Star Wars project, the idea of a worldwide =
Children's Peace Train was mooted by Dr. Timothy Watson (a Canadian =
working in South Korea) and Dr. Leo Rebello (of Bombay, India).
The delegates were housed in Mumbai at Terapanth Bhavan, a spacious =
building built at a cost of Rs.15 crores and inaugurated by Dr. =
A.P.J.Kalam, the President of India, on 15th February. Some delegates =
who stayed behind were taken on a sightseeing tour of Bombay including =
Elephanta Caves on 1st March (Mahashivratri) and with that the =
conference ended with a firm resolve to work on the articles of the =
declaration.=20
