Dear Sivaram,
I would like to echo your concern that this should be a truly locally-based IMC and call on others in India, particularly members of the Madurai collective who have a long association with India IMC, to engage in Indymedia work. The whole thrust of the proposal was to open up the collective to new members, not simply "take power".
I am sure that with fanatical postings advocating hate and violence removed from the newswire and a more regularly updated features column, more local activists will become involved. Therefore, outreach work will be as important as editorial work. However, we must be mindful of the role the diaspora can play in supporting local groups.
Here are my thoughts on the organisation of IMC India. I believe that administering the newswire could be taken up by some in the diaspora with better internet access. Relying solely on local volunteers spending money in expensive internet cafes to counter the well-organised US-based Hindutva wreckers abusing the newswire is impractical, as we have seen with the Madurai collective's problems. More experienced Indymedia activists will also need to give support on technical aspects.
Meanwhile, local volunteers can spend their time writing on local activism and developing the editorial side, which is really what Indymedia is about. The publication of an off-line pdf edition, which could be downloaded, printed and circulated easily to those without internet access could be an essential part of India Indymedia's future. It would really bring a whole load of people not adequately served by the internet into Indymedia.
These are only ideas and are up for discussion.
Sivaram, I do not want to act as a proxy. Nor do I have the time to be the sole local activist involved in India IMC in the long-term. At the end of October, I will leave for the Himalayas for a month and I do not expect to have good internet access. So, I am hoping people on this list from India will respond and give support to the editorial process. At the moment, I am the only person dealing with administering the newswire and I really need more help.
Regards,
Ganesh.
