Hi, Tony et al,
My name is Dave, I am part of the FTAA video working group, now living
in Cambridge UK. I'd like to thank the good people of the various
IMC-UK lists who took the time to respond to my queries about getting
Billy Bragg's permission to use the "Marching Song of the Covert
Battalions" in the film; it may need to be renamed "Marching Song of the
Overt Battalions" in keeping with the times, but it was a very welcome
addition to the movie, and we did in fact secure permission to use it.
I have a NTSC-DV copy of the video (on tape) here, and will try to get
you a copy as soon as possible so we can show it in the UK. I am not
sure of the best way to go about transfer to PAL - any tips?
The video in its present form is not the whole story, as we are going to
incorporate footage from the recent Ecuador protests when we get it -
but that may be a few months away.
I have written software that can be used to distribute the video on
CD-ROM, playable on any Windows or Mac machine with a script to detect
and install Quicktime if it is not present; this may be a good
alternate means of distribution if people are interested - anyone with a
CD burner becomes a potential distributor.
I will be attending the festivities at Whitehall on Monday with a group
from Cambridge, if any video people want to team up on coverage, please
email me. If anyone has any interest in starting a Cambridge IMC,
please let me know; I have been posting things to the UK newswire but
am interested in starting a subsite here...
Dave

Hello - just noticed this at the ftaa video list - great that it is at
last finished - we have been looking forward to see the film over here -
Can you tell me will it be available in PAL? for us to show in europe or
could we have a DV mini disc - to make our own and do screenings? No
rush this end - I am sure there are networks in Americas that will need
this film first but when you have time drop us a line
cheers tony One of imc-uk network

IMC VIDEO ON Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA)
ADVANCE COPIES AVAILABLE
Title: Trading Freedom: the secret life of the FTAA Total running time:
56 minutes
We are very pleased to announce that advance copies of our documentary
on the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) are now available. It's
called "Trading Freedom: the secret life of the FTAA", and it offers an
explanation of what the FTAA is, what it will mean, and how people
across the Americas are resisting it. With the next Summit of the
Americas protests due in Quito, Ecuador on October 31st, 2002, we hope
that the advance version of the video will help people with their
organizing efforts and solidarity actions.
This one's got it all - indigenous struggles, working-class resistance,
women vs. the FTAA, Your Biotech Future, media activism, the NAFTA
Chapter 11 investor-state dispute settlement mechanism, and the
ever-popular "state repression of dissent" (coming soon to to a town
near you). Footage from Akwesasne, Chiapas, Quebec City, Sao Paulo, and
Tijuana and the combined efforts of over 100 videographers,
photographers, free radio outlaws, writers, editors, techs, and
rabble-rousers make this the perfect vid for your local anti-FTAA event.
With implementation of the accord only a few years away, time is
running out.
Don't mourn. Organize.
You can contact yomama@riseup.net to get an advance copy on VHS or dv
tape - the final version will include footage from Quito and will be
available on VHS as well as downloadable on CD-ROM. We are hoping to
find a download location for the CD-ROM advance version as well, if
anyone has a fast server and 650 MB of storage space kicking around,
please let us know.
Sincerely,
IMC-FTAA Video Working Group
ps sorry for the lateness of this message, we have been working hard to
get this ready.
