Hello Toby and all:
Yes, i also like the ideas in the new design. :)
I think Toby's work is definitelly better than what we currently have
online :)
I like the fact that under 'news areas' we have all the sections with the
same sort of prominence. I've always had a problem with, for example
world, resistance, and other pages being less visible than the uk one.
I also like the fact that more sections could be added in there as
when/if they are needed.
In fact, the page now online has got a quite similar structure to the one
we discussed when some people met for a braistorm on re-design ideas ...
telepathy or what! :)
But there are some details that came to my mind straight away when i saw
the page, and i would like to quickly comment upon:
a) the title of "United Kingdon Independent M C" that appears on the top
of the browser's frame ... the "united kingdom' thingie makes my stomach
twist.
b) i'd would propose a banner which is a bit more visual in terms of
imagery. Definitelly not as messy as the one we have now, but one that
plays a bit more with the ((i)) idea. I've been looking for some examples
we once put online, but I couldn't find them anywhrere. I think either
tony or mauro probably still have these urls. They were playing with am
image of the world map, the ((i)) and the name quite nicelly i thought.
I also like very much the way the barcelona's site plays with the heading
banner(s). These keep changing every so often, but they always keep a
stylistic line.
also, i'm not so sure with the white background. I prefer it to the black
one, but i'd like to see other possible clear tones (i remember we also
played with the background colours once)
I am also missing the 'upcoming' section that we have now on top of the
newswire. I think this is a very important section which, if anything,
should be made clearer than we have now.
anyway these are my first thoughts when seeing Toby's work. Some are only
stylistic matters that are not so important right now.
Also, an essential aspect of redesigning is to think about how we
classify the information. For example in the new design, we have a
default 'latest' page, and then the news areas with uk, world, hackney,
etc...
Does this mean that this default page will include all 'latest' news no
matter whether they are uk, world or local news and then they will be
moved into their sections (uk, world, etc...) after they go down the page?
Are we gonna have in 'latest',for example, only the last 4 features, and
the rest in their sections?
Obviously i'm not asking Toby to answer these questions here. I'm just
pointing to some aspects we all need to discuss and decide upon.
ok, let's coordinate all the people and work being done for the brand new
site ... that's been due for a while now :)
salut!
jordi.
