Harmony
Wednesday 14 August 2002, 6:00 pm to 10:30 p.m.
St. Andrews Auditorium, Bandra (W)

On the eve of Independence Day this year, we want to bring together
the people of Mumbai to celebrate, in a special way, our composite
culture and secular spirit.

Harmony is a one-off, curated concert, where classical forms of music
and dance are brought together in a fresh, contemporary format.

The concert will begin with a dance performance, an invocation for
peace and communal harmony. We then follow a sequence from Dhrupad
instrumental recital, through the Khayal and Thumri vocal traditions,
to more experimental compositions by a young new breed of classically
inspired artists. All the artists will be sharing their personal
views with the audience.

The art forms, and the artists themselves, are living icons of a deep
secular tradition. The stories that they bring to us are the timeless
smileys of our civilisation. Theirs is a humane beauty, a syncretic
spirit that is inspired by many religions and favours none.

=46or us, as young artists and "cultural producers", the challenge was
to reach out to our own generation. We present this continuously
morphing history, this age-old funk, in a way never seen before.
Animation and live video feed will interpret and embellish the
performances.

Now more than ever, we need this binding glue, this whole picture.

This day, 14th August also marks a violent partition, the wounds of
which are still raw, more so following the recent communal bloodshed
in the country.

In the spirit of this event, all artists, are performing for free.
All proceeds from ticket sales are being sent to Gujarat for
rehabilitation of the riot-affected population, many still unable to
resume normal lives
and livelihoods.

Please join us in making this an evening we will all remember. Let's
cherish the unique diversity of our unity. Jeeyo aur jeene do. See
you there.

Please forward this friends, family and foes! Salaam Bombay.

Tickets Rs 100 for students. Rs 200 for citizens.
