Dear jyothi,
i'm delighted to hear that people in Bangalore would like to
start an IMC! :) :)
i'm just one volunteer in the new-imc working group (but want to quit
soon because it takes a lot of time) and i noticed your message quoted
above. The fact that noone seems to have replied yet is maybe your
first lesson about how we work: it's just volunteers, and sometimes
people are too busy, or one group is less well organised than another
group, and the more you spend time looking around *yourself* in the
mailing list archives:
http://lists.indymedia.org/
rather than waiting for others, the more chances there are that you'll
discover that your questions may already have been answered...
HOW TO GET STARTED:
Probably the most important thing to say is that what is important is
a *process* between human beings and networks of people rather than
*formalities*.
Please start reading through the documents at these pages:
***************************
http://newimc.indymedia.org
***************************
and you will be able to get an idea of the process.
i'm cc-ing this message to the new-imc working group and
to the imc-mumbai group, hopefully someone else will help
talk you through the process. You will be able to see archived
copies of this message here:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2002-August/
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-mumbai/2002-August/
And of course you are welcome to respond directly on either
list, as you feel is appropriate.
Just an immediate comment based on your introduction letter: it would
be important that people from your institute only participate as
*individuals*, who *catalyse* a collective of a wide variety of people
living in Bangalore, since indymedia is supposed to be independent of
government and corporate organisations, and in fact should be
independent from any hierarchical organisation, as well being
non-hierarchical itself.
So you would need to find people from many grassroots activist groups
who would participate on equal terms, with equal roles in
coordinating, decision-making, facilitating meetings, developing
editorial policy as any members of the IIJNM
( http://www.iijnm.org ). By using a publicly archived mailing list
(contact: listwork@lists.indymedia.org), everyone would be able to see
what everyone else says, and take the time to read through the
conversations at her/his own leisure. It also means that people's
contributions and participations become clear to everyone...
Of course, it would make sense to concentrate on local Bangalore
issues, and this is exactly the hope of any IMC - all the more
important that Bangalore women's rights groups, dalits' groups,
housing rights groups, environmental activists, etc. living in and
around Bangalore participate - they are the ones that will provide the
most direct, first-hand information on what is happening!
Anyway, hopefully you'll find someone at new-imc
(maybe a new volunteer from Bombay??) who can help talk you
through this, but even if you don't, you should hopefully find
the information you need in the list archives, and by going through
http://newimc.indymedia.org
You're most welcome to browse through all these archives and
contact any of the lists to learn about what happens there,
though possibly imc-mumbai
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-mumbai
might be the most interesting to you.
i suggest you reply either to new-imc@lists.indymedia.org
or to imc-mumbai@lists.indymedia.org (not to me personally)...
Good luck!
