Hey all,
Below are the minutes of the IMC meeting on the 10th. Sorry for the =
slightly haphazard editing of the minutes, please just do ask for =
clarifications and please do comment on discussion at the meeting.
Meeting: 10th August, at Comet Media Foundation.
People in attendance: Riddhi, Aspy, Sanjay, Shekhar, Avik, Patricia, =
Nirupa.
Shekhar updating on progress and our movement through the new-imc list =
to proocess - discussing what we need to do till then.
Discussing bombay/mumbai - we agree on boud's suggestion to use both =
aliases and list ourselves as bombay/mumbai .
Editorial policy: need an editorial policy and form an editorial group. =
suggest one person from PUKAR, one from Comet, one from CED, plus anyone =
else who wishes to volunteer.
Role of the editor:
Promoting articles to feature, encouraging content, help people with =
content provision, moderate the newswire.
Riddhi asking if there can be an editor who;s bsed in the USA - =
discussion .
Aspy - forming editorial group should start with a local group - and =
decisions will be made immediately public, and everyone will be =
encouraged to respond to decisions made in the editorial group.=20
Aspy - discussing links boud has sent, about decision making, consensus =
vs. voting procedures, the concept of open publishing, principles of =
unity ... Aspy's question for discussion - which is the decision-making =
body?
perhaps each group, eg. editor, admin, larger group, can each have their =
own ways of forming decision making policy.=20
Editors need to be in place soon and have editorial meetings ASAP.
What is consensus? how easy will it be?
Aspy sharing with us documents on consensus making and decision making.
Discussing the meaning of consensus.
If we use consensus, what are reasons that people can block a proposal =
for? Do valid reasons have to be given? You have to block as a matter of =
principle.
Shekhar discussing his experience with the Philadelphia IMC,=20
Suggesting that perhaps consensus cannot work for the larger group, but =
it can perhaps work for the smaller sub-groups.
We should send out an email calling for volunteers for editors and/or =
nominations for editors with a deadline of 20th August.
Discussion on legal aspects - our position being that we are completely =
open and therefore are not responsible for content onthe site. is that a =
plausible argument? With more stringent anti-terrorism laws, how do we =
tackle legal issues?
editorial policy of open publishing will have to discuss implementation =
of legal aspects.
Aspy discussing the article - "open publishing and free software".
the concept of open publishing is a lot different from free software - =
software is something that is meant to program computers - media is =
influencing and affecting human beings, and open publishing empowers the =
individual against the corporate media manipulation.
Discussing Woorld Social Forum meeting in 2004 in India - discussing =
what World Social Forum is, etc. =20
Also, Jan., 2003, regional Asian Social Forum to be held in Hyderabad. =
we must do more outreach and networing with the social forums.
IMC should have a presence at the Asian Social Forum, to use it also as =
base to do further outreach.
Shekhar - getting volunteers from colleges to serve as IMC =
correspondents in colleges.
How to make people on the list ore active?
How do we deal with misinformtion? where facts are dubious?
when people are posting, they should be responsible enough to verify =
souurces or at lest make it clear if they are not clear about sources.
also, people should be encouraged to comment on articles and raise =
doubts on sources, etc.
Shekhar suggests hosting workshops on journalism, creating media, etc.
Discussing different ways to get people involved - organizing workshops, =
documentary workshops, journalism workshops, talking to students.
Nirupa - discussing the water project being worked on. they have been =
going around Bombay, doing research, seeing possibilities of rain-water =
harvesting, spreading awareness on infrastructure.
Wilson College nature club is making a presentation on water. After the =
exhibition, thhe Wilson student will contribute to Indymedia and help =
with water awreness programs in schools, etc.
Discussion on using a paper medium to reach out to people who dont have =
access to the internet.
Discussion on tech - we need more people who can volunteer to be part of =
a "tech group".
Discussing on possibilities of IMC events.
Patricia - need to have much more outreach/interactive events to get =
college students and people involved.
Do better coverage of events happening in the city, and thereby =
popularize events - we play a role of informing about events, helping in =
networking.
Popularize, help in other events as much as possible before moving into =
events of our own.
Aspy - suggestion - what we need is a 4-5 page "manual" of "how to be an =
Indymedia correspondent" to get the information together and inform =
people about what Indymedia is all about and how to work things, upload =
to the site, etc. - this is something that must be worked on. (would =
anyone volunteer to help?)
Wind up, thanking Comet Media Foundation for their hospitality.
next meeting: 23rd August, 5:30 P.M., PUKAR office.
=20
(perhaps this meeting was slightly sparsely attended because of the =
rains and other events going on in the city - do hope that the next =
meeting on the 23rd will be a full house.)
