Dear friends at Bombay Indymedia,
i'm delighted to see your organising
getting underway rapidly!
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-mumbai/2002-
July/000033.html

Here are three suggestions:

(1) Would it be possible to start putting
minutes of the meetings on the
imc-mumbai mailing list, so that
everyone is clear about what was discussed,
what was decided, etc. ?

(2) In your draft answer to the membership criteria:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-mumbai/2002-
July/000042.html

> g. Adopt a decision-making policy that is in alignment with
consensus
> principles which include open, transparent and egalitarian
processes,
>
> A: Yes.

i wonder if you could try to explain what
your decision-making methods are.

Do shekhar and sanjay act as facilitators
to make sure that everyone gets
the chance to make comments or possibly
to block a decision if he/she
has a really fundamental reason to do this?
Is there some plan of rotating
facilitators once other people get the energy
to be willing to try this ? i'm of
course only guessing as to what the de facto
decision-making process is
so far, but given that you (collectively)
seem to have taken strong decisions on deadlines,
i guess that you already have some
decision-making process in place, even
if this is implicit and not explicit.

Simply by stating what this implicit process is
should help everyone to think about it
and to start thinking about what can be
done to avoid the risks of (implicit) hierarchy.

(i should mention here that IMC Poland does not yet
have a decision-making policy... Our de facto policy
seems to be discussions in a few face-to-face meetings,
and full consensus via successive version numbers of
documents on our mailing list, or by the fact that
some action is proposed and nobody opposes it.)

(3)
> i. Participate in the key IMC Network Communication Methods
that
> pertain to the health and vitality of the Network and that
contribute
> to the work of the IMC. Assure that at least one person from
your
> local IMC participates at any given time on the IMC-
Communications
> list,
>
> A: Yes.

Maybe you could check that at least
one person is on at least each of
the following global lists, e.g. put
their names so that everyone in
IMC Bombay knows who is filling
out what role:

imc-communication
imc-process [chaotic at the moment]
imc-finance
imc-proposals
imc-global
imc-summaries

with the idea that they report back to
imc-mumbai or at a meeting when
they feel that something useful or
important comes up, and vice-versa.
You might also
want to have someone in the
regional "Oceania" group:

http://lists.cat.org.au/cgi-bin/mailman/listinfo/imc-australasia

and the Jakarta IMC:
imc-jakarta

and i'm sure you already have many
people on imc-india :).

solidarity
