An Invitation=20
to=20
a presentation on=20
Urban Transport Priorities and High Capacity Bus Systems=20

by=20

Dr. Walter Hook, Executive Director, Institute for Transportation and Devel=
opment Policy, USA=20

Dr Geetam Tiwari, Architect and Transportation Planning & Traffic Engineeri=
ng Specialist, IIT Delhi=20

Prof Dinesh Mohan, Henry Ford Professor for Biomechanics and Transportation=
Safety and Coordinator, Transportation Research & Injury Prevention Progra=
mme, IIT Delhi=20

on Friday 18 October 2002 at 6:30 PM=20
(Please be seated by 6:20 PM)=20
at Coomaraswami Hall, Prince of Wales Museum, Mumbai

Urban Design Research Institute - UDRI - is a forum that supports interacti=
on among architects, urban designers and professionals from such related fi=
elds as urban economics, sociology, planning, conservation and history, wit=
h the hope that this inter-disciplinary dialogue will make the city of our =
grand children a better place. An independent institution, which requires n=
o previous membership or affiliation, UDRI aims to enrich the understanding=
of the urban environment and work towards its improvement UDRI's objective=
is to raise the standard of architectural dialogue, enhance the role of de=
signers and planners, give content to public discussion on major issues con=
cerning the urban fabric of Bombay and to expose urban design and planning =
to other mediums.=20

In order to achieve this, UDRI has developed a programme which focuses on S=
eminars, Lectures, Publications, Research Projects and the creation of a Re=
search and Resource Centre.=20

Dear Friend,=20

We seldom find space in our busy schedule to look at certain issues that af=
fect our lives. We learn to cope up with the adverse situations at personal=
levels and some of us do manage to succeed. Majority, however does not sim=
ply because the system does not permit. In the due course of time even thos=
e who succeed cannot escape the systemic failures.=20

Urban Transportation is one such issue that affects all of us in one way or=
the other and for Mumbai, there have been several proposals made by severa=
l expert committees over the years, all lending strength to the oft stated =
words - In India and in Mumbai nothing really works, at least efficiently. =
And that there is no escape. But the efforts for improvement must go on.=20

The investments on the 50 odd flyovers have not been in vain - at least yet=
. We have definitely witnessed a relief in traffic movement in the past few=
years. This fact itself states simply that if the problems are addressed, =
solutions are available, irrespective of whether or not, the solution is th=
e most efficient and affordable or long lasting. It is a matter of Public P=
olicy and we as citizens must be aware of possible alternate solutions avai=
lable and must exercise our right to know and give our informed opinions.=20

Economy, Elegance, Efficiency and Ecology must be given their due in any de=
cision process.

We would be delighted if you could attend the presentation and participate =
in the discussion that will follow. As you know, this is a critical issue =
for the city of Mumbai and our collective thinking in articulation of issue=
s on the subject could go a long way in clarifying the importance and role =
of public transportation in Mumbai.=20

Looking forward to seeing you on 18 October 2002.=20

Regards and best wishes,=20
