INTRODUCTION
India is a country characterized by heterogeneity. There are
differences along the lines of community and religion, social class,
gender, and ethnicity. While these differences add to the rich
diversity of Indian culture, they also have the potential to rip
asunder the social fabric of the nation. Recent events have provided
ample evidence of the impact of these divisions in our society. For
example, the disturbances caused due to the reservation policy, riots
due to communalism, and female foeticide, are all manifestations of
the deep prejudicial views held by people in our society. As social
scientists, it is time that we began to understand these processes,
and how they operate within our culture. It is only from the research
generated within our socio-cultural context that we will begin to
understand and deal with this prejudice and discrimination.

The Conference
The purpose of the conference is two-fold. First, it is an attempt to
create an understanding of the prevalent processes of prejudice.
These may be in the areas of community, work, healthcare, or gender.
Second, and as important, is the aim of creating an interest in
research in the student community. Through this, students will also
be sensitized to these processes in society. Keeping these goals in
mind, the proceedings of the seminar will be published as a book that
will serve as a reference for the future. Also, only students will
research the papers presented at the conference. Any teacher involved
in the research will be listed as the last author.

Papers Research
Papers are invited in the following areas:
Prejudice and communalism
Gender discrimination
Discrimination due to disability
Discrimination at the workplace
Social class and prejudice
Discrimination in healthcare

The papers submitted have to be reports of original research. The
papers will be screened by a Scientific Committee to determine their
conformity with the theme of the conference. Abstracts of papers
should be
submitted by September 30, 2002. The full text of the paper should
reach the Scientific Committee before October 31, 2002. Papers should
be prepared according to the publication manual of the American
Psychological Association and must not exceed 1500 words. One
electronic copy of the full text of the
paper (on a 31/2=94 diskette) should also be submitted. The principal
investigators have to be undergraduate or postgraduate students
enrolled in a recognized educational institution. Any teacher that
guides the research will be permitted last authorship. Teachers
guiding the research will be permitted authorship in not more than
one paper submitted to the conference. Papers must be presented by
one of the principal investigators. Last authors will not be
permitted to make presentations. However, certificates of
participation will be given to all authors of accepted papers.

PROGRAMME
The two days of the conference will include paper presentations by
the students and a discussion by a panel of eminent representatives
of various organizations working in the field. Tentatively, there
will be 5 sessions (of two hours=92 duration each) of paper
presentations on the first day and part of the second day. Each
presentation will be for a maximum of 15 minutes, followed by a
discussion. The second day will have eminent persons from the fields
of social work, industry, psychology, law, and the NGO sector
presenting their experiences of prejudice and discrimination. This
will be followed by a panel discussion

Registration
Registration fee for all participants will be Rs. 250/-. This will
cover mid- morning and mid-afternoon tea, and lunch on both days. All
authors of accepted papers must register individually for the
conference. It may be possible to reduce the registration fee for
some student participants. Requests for such reduction will have to
be made well in advance with justification for the request.
