Dear IndyMedia and Youth Social Forum:
The World Social Forum is a well-known global meeting of tens of
thousands of people from social movements, progressive groups,
scholars and activists from across the world in the city of Porto
Allegre, Brazil, which has been been happening for the past three
years. It is annually held as a progressive alternative to the World
Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. In January 2003, the regional
version of the WSF, called the Asian Social Forum, will be organised
for the first time, in Hyderabad.
As part of the ASF in Hyderabad, a Youth Social Forum has been
specifically organised to voice the concerns, issues, and
consciousness of younger people from across India and South Asia. The
YSF has agreed to help bring young people, students and media makers
together to have an IndyMedia presence at the meeting. Some of us in
PUKAR, Open Circle Arts Trust, YUVA, and several software
programmers, media professionals, and others have met informally to
discuss some kind of event, workshop, or stall on independent media,
the politics of information, and media activism. We hope that
everyone in the Bombay IMC, and hopefully other media groups in other
parts of India and South Asia, can join in and help out. We are also
writing to the global IndyMedia network for their support and to send
people from IMCs in other countries, specifically the new ones in
Asia.
Anyone is free to join us to discuss how to participate and help out
in the Asian Social Forum. We hope that everyone connected to what is
happening in the Bombay IndyMedia Centre will also come to this
meeting to learn more about the ASF. For more information, check out
