Dear All,
Greetings! Some survivors of the 1984 Bhopal gas
disaster are currently in the U.S. They were on a
hunger strike from May 1st to May 12th, and have now
asked their supporters to keep alive the (ongoing)
relay hunger strike till Dec 3rd, the 19th
anniversary of the disaster. For more on this, please
see http://www.bhopal.net/globalrelayfast.html
Union Carbide, whose callousness was largely
responsible for the disaster, along with Warren
Anderson, then CEO of Union Carbide, have both been
criminally charged but have ignored the warrants from
Indian courts and have long been declared fugitives
from law. Meanwhile, Dow Chemicals acquired Union
Carbide in 2001, but continues to lie (most recently
on May 8th, during its annual general body meeting)
about the liabilities it inherited through Union
Carbide. The environmental mess left behind by Union
Carbide continues to kill about 15 people every
month, adding to the more than 20,000 dead so far.
The Indian Government has been largely apathetic. The
U.S. govt, obviously, doesn't care either. Do we?
"$500 is plenty good for an Indian," said one Kathy
Hunt, Dow Chemical's PR official. Do we agree?
In a world torn by violence, these protestors have
steadfastly adopted non-violent means. If we really
yearn for peace, isn't it our duty to support them?
Those who have endured so much due to the disaster
shouldn't need to starve for justice. Lets share some
of their burden. If someone is interested in fasting
once a week (or fortnight etc), pls mail me back. We
can then coordinate amongst ourselves and make sure
the relay fast continues. If this sounds too
complicated, you can also register on-line at:

Please visit http://www.bhopal.net for the latest on
this issue. A petition requesting the extradition of
Anderson is available at

Thanks!
Ravi
ps: I apologize if you get multiple copies of this
message.
