OVERVIEW
During the Republican National Convention, thousands of activists
took to the streets of Philadelphia to demand that the narrow
spectrum of issues presented by the two-party system be widened.
While making their demands through non-violent protest, approximately
430 activists were arrested, with with many still behind bars.
With US law enforcement officials demonstrating counter-movement
tactics tracking, arresting, and posting unreasonably high bails
for key activists in Philadelphia, one thing is clear:
The Seattle Generation has finally arrived on the radar of U.S.
law-enforcement authorities, and the threat posed by our political
commitment to building international networks of resistance is being
perceived as something real, something immediate and something they
will attempt to stop.
As attention shifts to LA, the IMC will keep
one eye on the companeros still being held captive in Philly and
one eye on the issues activists in L.A. demand be admitted into
a wider U.S. political debate.

STATEMENT OF 9 JAILED PHILLY ACTIVISTS
This disturbing letter describes conditions that jailed activists,
along with the general prison population, are presently enduring in
Philadelphia's abysmal criminal-justice system. "Many prisoners here
have been awaiting trial for two or more years. Medical emergencies
routinely go unattended for weeks or even months. The food is frequently
unfit for human consumption. Pods are overcrowded, with cells serving for
six men at a time. Prisoners are beaten by guards. In one case, ten guards
savagely beat a handcuffed prisoner into unconsciousness. Phones are
commonly out of order, making contact with families and lawyers impossible."

LABOR TO PLAY A MAJOR ROLE IN D2K PROTESTS
by Michael Everett
On July 29, the DNC adopted a strong anti-labor platform asking labor to
support passage of fast track and strengthening of the WTO, and rejecting
universal health care and a living wage. Labor will be in the streets in
full force at the D2K protests to send a message that it will NOT roll
over for the corporate free-trade agenda.

$913,000 IN PAC MONEY FUNDS LIEBERMAN
by Bob Feldman
Over 25% of the campaign funds that Dem VP-Designate Lieberman has
collected during the last two years has been obtained from various
special interest PACs, according to the Center for Responsive Politics'
web site. The right-wing Free Cuba PAC, for instance, gave Lieberman's a
$10,000 campaign contribution, as did the PACs of Pentagon weapons

THE SOUND AND THE FURY: THE LESSONS OF RIOTING

sense of discomfort being experienced by mainstream culture as
it begins to realize that anti-globalization politics and the call

ZAPATISTA COMMUNITY OCCUPIED BY ARMED PARAMILITARIES
You think we had it bad in the streets of Seattle, DC, and Philly?
Armed right-wing paramilitaries continue to occupy the Zapatista
support community of "Tierra y Libertad." The paramilitaries arrived
in a group of about 30+ dressed as state public-security forces,
40 in civilian clothing, three in masks armed with pistols, R-15's,
and 22-caliber rifles. They proceeded to loot farms, fire their weapons
into the air and towards fleeing townspeople, burn six houses, and drive 48
families into the mountains.
