ok. i'm sending this again... because the first time i sent it, the email did
not reach the list (as far as i know, did it reach it and it just not show up
in my mailbox?)... sorry if this does show up more then once..
--->
Hello everyone...
ok, *disclaimer* please do NOT respond to this a bunch of times... this is
for everyone who wants off the list ... all you need to do is follow these
instructions ... if you have further questions, you can fill up the admin's
mailbox
(mailman-owner@lists.indymedia.org) with your compaints/comments/questions.
(I'm not an admin of this indymedia list... so please don't start emailing me
with complaints, etc!)

you should have received an email from indymedia recently (in the last day) -
it should contain your password.
if you have the mail or not ... follow this URL to unsubscribe:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/options/imc-news/[YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS]

*EXAMPLE*:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/options/imc-news/mammondoll@yahoo.com

once at the webpage you will see your options ... if you have your password
that was in the email, in the "unsubscribe from imc-news" area of the page,
type in your password and then click unsubscribe.... this should do the
trick. you may get an email from indymedia asking you to confirm ... if so,
read that mail and make sure there are not any more steps you need to take to
unsubscribe.

If you don't have your password from the email you received, then click on
the "email my password to me" button on the site, and it should be emailed to
you, and then you can unsubscribe from the list (directions above).

ok. hopefully this helps. if this doesn't work, email indymedia... not this
mailing list with unsubscribe in the subject line - it only fills up peoples
mailboxes and it doesn't accomplish anything.

also, i'm wondering, does anyone have any idea what this mailing list is
about? was it planned to be a discussion list of imc news events? if you have
the answer to this, i'd be interested in knowing... (maybe you should email
me privately about it as well...)

Thanks
-Jen

Dear imc-news subscribers,

This message is an explanation of what happened on this list a few
days ago (the flooding of the the list with "unsubscribe"
requests) and why it happened.

Last week, Indymedia moved all it's mailing lists to a new server and
converted the lists to run on a new mailing list management program.
During the conversion of the mailing lists, some of them, including
imc-news, were misconfigured.

Imc-news was originally set up to be an anouncements-only mailing
list. Meaning that only messages and submissions approved by the
imc-news editorial group would be sent out to the mailing list and
subscribers to the list were prevented from posting. Unfortunately,
when the imc-news list was moved to the new server, it was
inadvertantly set up to allow all subscribers to post to the list.

A few days ago one of the subscribers sent a message to the imc-news
list requesting to be unsubscribed. This caused other subscribers to
reply to that intital message and thus initiate a self-perpetuating
flurry of messages to the list (a total of 93, to be exact). As each
person lashed out in their frustration, they actaully made the
problem worse.

Once the imc-tech team saw the problem we attempted to fix it. This
was difficult to do initially, because all the traffic that the imc-
list subscribers were creating was putting a significant load on the
server. The problem has now been completely fixed and we can assure
you that this problem will NOT happen again.

About unsubscribing from imc-news:

During the past few days, we have recieved literally hundreds of
requests to be unsubscribed from imc-news. I would like to take the
opportunity to explain to imc-news subscribers that each and every
one of you recieved a message (actually, you recieved this message
the day before the mess in question occured) which describes the
following things:

1) How to subscribe/unsubscribe from any indymedia list.
2) Which indymedia lists you are subscribed to.
3) Your list passwords which are required to unsubscribe from
indymedia lists.

If you deleted or lost this message, you can wait until next
month when this reminder message is sent out again.

If you know your password and you wish to unsubscribe now, you can
unsubscribe automatically via email. Simply send email to
"imc-news-request@lists.indymedia.org" with the subject "unsubscribe
password", where password is the your mailing list password.

If you don't know your mailing list password send email to
"imc-news-request@lists.indymedia.org" with the subject "password".

We'd love to comply with the wishes of those who have asked to be
unsubscribed but, because there are so many of you and we are
all unpaid volunteers, we do not have the person power to maunallly
fulfill your requests.

In closing, I hope that you all consider staying on the imc-news list
now that you know the whole story.

Thank you,
Shawn Ewald -- IMC Tech team
