FORWARD ASSOCIATION "ARE YOU SELLING WEVD?"
LISTENERS WANT TO KNOW
NEW YORK-June 25- Listeners to radio station WEVD-AM 1050 in New York =
City will set up an informational
picket line in front of the offices of The Forward Association, 45 East =
33rd Street, New York City on Thursday
June 28, 2001 between the hours of 4 P.M. and 6 P.M. =20
After months of lobbying, Save WEVD, a group of concerned listeners to =
radio station WEVD, is angered by the fact that
the owners of WEVD, the Forward Association, have been unresponsive to =
its most loyal listeners.
The question still remains, "Are you going to sell our radio station?
Not only has The Forward Association failed to respond to the loyal =
listeners to WEVD, but it has also been silent
when questioned by the press on this very subject. This is strange =
behavoir, considering the fact that The Forward Association
is a group of journalists, who boast of having a progressive agenda.
WEVD is an antidote to the hard right-wing talk stations on the AM dial. =
Bill Mazer, Ed Koch, Sam Greenfield and Alan Colmes represent points of =
view that are consistent with a great tradition in New York City radio.=20
Does New York City need a third all sports radio station? Do New Yorkers =
only desire right-wing political talk
on the radio dial? That is what will happen if the Forward Association =
goes ahead with the rumored sale
to Disney/ABC/ESPN.
It had been hoped that The Forward Association would remain true to its =
stated purpose and not=20
violate the spirit of the station's mission to honor Eugene V. Debs. But =
this is not the case. After displaying
extraordinary patience and repect, the members of SaveWEVD have decided =
to change its strategy.
Save WEVD demands that The Forward Association become publicly =
accountable. If the station is not going to be
sold let us know. This action is the beginning of a new campagin by =
the listeners group to halt the imminent sale of the station. Save WEVD =
is now exploring the possibility of challenging The Forward =
Association's hold on the FCC license for WEVD.
The members of SaveWEVD have been lobbying The Forward Association for =
months not to sell the stand-alone,=20
news-talk radio station to Disney/ABC/ESPN. The rumored sale price is =
considered to be in the neighorhood
of $80-85 million, with the new owners using the freqeuncy to be the =
flagship station for
ESPN sports-radio network. The efforts by the listeners group, =
SaveWEVD, and the creation
of the web site www.SaveWEVD.com has been ignored by The Forward =
Association.
Save WEVD expects the informational picketing to inform the larger =
community to the fact that The Forward Association has not fulfilled its =
responsibilty to the New York City. For some time now The Forward =
Association has been exploiting the resource of WEVD to serve as its =
private cash cow. While the listeners value the programmingof Bill =
Mazer, Sam Greenfield, Ed Koch and Alan Colmes, the Forward Association =
only views that programming as window dressing for the hours upon hours =
of paid infomercials that rake in the profit for The Forward =
Association. But that money making scheme is not enough for the Forward =
Association. The temptation of selling off WEVD for $80-85 million =
dollars is too much to resist.=20
The informational picketing is just the first action in a series of =
events designed to shine the light of truth on the
future of radio station WEVD and the entity that owns its license, The =
Forward Association.
