This is a letter that reflects Indymedia Argentina's collective debate, in relation with the news that the global network was discussing a subsidy of the  Ford Foundacion to finance regional meetings of Indymedia. We also have being debating about if it´s good to recive money from that foundation. Because of the urgency of the things (today we find out that the 15th of September the formal request), we are asking to all the indymedia´s of the world to read it and to give their opinions about it. Please add your comments and your solidarity with copy to argentina@indymedia.org, so that all the collectives (Alto Valle, Buenos Aires, Rosario) read it.

We received with surprise and concern the news that an idea of carrying out an indymedia´s international meeting financed by the Ford Foundation was been discused.  
In our country, the Ford Foundation is a reason of permanent polemic, and in most of the movements, the one that receives a subsidy of that Foundation is pointed out with a finger like a traitor. For indymedia argentina, to accept a subsidy of that foundation would be in the first place a suicide; if everybody here would know it, the place that nowadays indymedia haves here, based on a year and half of lot´s of effort, would be quickly trowed to the garbage. And with enough reasons.  
We believe that argentina indymedia is a tool that is being used by many movements and that is playing a very important rol in the last years. It woluldn´t be correct to sacrifice it in the altar of the corporations.  
 
Here the name Ford is automatically associeted  to the last militar dictatorship (2); all the operatives of the army to kidnap, to torture and to murder 30.000 people were carried out in Ford Falcon´s donated directly from United States. Today, when crossing in the street with one or those typical green Ford Falcon´s, you associates it with the darkness of those times.  
  
Many comrades told us that the Ford Foundation is independent of the Ford company, which can be true, but is not enough for the thousands of persons that kwnow about the history of both. Here, they are known like part of the same thing, and it´s a fact that they both have beeing sharing the same strategy of supporting the imperialistic politics of the United States, mainly about what concerns to the the impunity for the genocides of the last militar dictatorship.  
  
We believe that it is not necessary to clarify here again that the Foundation was created by Henry Ford, a nazi that was even recognized by Hitler like one his inspiring ones. And to repeat what James Petras have denounced  many times, the Foundation has a narrow relationship with the CIA. They have finananced hundred of projects of the agency, some of them dedicated to study the situation of the social movements in the third world, and others -the majority - directly to get involved with the politics of those movements.  
  
Since the early 80´s, when the military dictatorship was over, an important part of the politics of the Ford Foundacion in our country were about trying to weaken the human rights movements that were openly in opposition to the impunity of the army. In fact, they used the same strategy that they used with the black movement in United States. (see part 2)  
  
We, as the organizations of human rights that didn't negotiate the blood of their deads, as the organizations of unemployeed and of occupai workers that maintain their autonomy, we reject to take a coin from those hands taht are spotted with the blood of our comrades. The "Madres de Plaza de Mayo" think that they are not individuals' mothers, they are the mothers of  30.000 missing persons. We are also sons, brothers, grandsons, cousins, friends and partners of the 30.000 desaparecidos. We carry the memory of all those comrades in our hearts. The force that cames from that love alouds us to continue fighting for a better world every day. We invite all our comrades of all the indymedia´s of the world to adopt in their hearts our missing comrades. We must reject any type of institutional relationship with the accomplices of the genocide of the military dictatorship, we must preserve the honor of argentina indymedia and of the global net.  
    
Some comrades of other countries told us that our opinion is just an infaltile whim. But it´s not like that. We agree with receiving donations, and as a matter of fact we really need them because we are about to lose our office in Buenos Aires, and the necessities of the collectives that are being formed inside the country are enormous and urgent. But we consider Indymedia a tool that has too much importance, too much transcendency, that it´s a patrimony of lot s of movements that are using it in our country: it wouldn´t be all right to put it under risk fore some dirty dollars. And we prefer, honestly, not to have a cent but to continue looking in the eyes to people we share a common work each day .We want to be as clear as possible: we are against maintaining institutional relationships with corporations, such like Ford in the first place.
  
It´s  not only a local problem. Associating the name of Ford, even in the most minimum thing, with Indymedia, it is something that is not only a dishonor for us, it is also a danger for our own existence.  
 
a) What Ford proposes 
 
As the comrades told us  in the IRC, the F.F. was interested in financing indymedia meetings for the following reassons and in the following ways:  
  
"they said that Indymedia is the global only ' organization' that has to ' successful - self organized - grassroots - horizontal organization... and so they want to help us develop our organizational structure so that they dog share it with other organizations they work with - thats what they say"  
"they said they ONLY wanted fund our organizational development. not hardware - not paying people - but paying for people to travel so that we dog meet face to face lives - that was basically what they said at the end of the meeting. (they said they wanted to start vey small and see how it worked - also the said that they wanted to start in america)"  
  
Regrettably we don't find public documents about it, so we base our testimony on partners in wich we trust completly. The only chance we have to disscuse it was the discussion in the meeting carried out in Buenos Aires and several conversations in IRC with the comrades form Uruguay, Brasil, Rosario y Buenos Aires. Evendo the partner's testimony, however, it´s enough to understand why  this foundation is interested in collaborating with Indymedia.  
    
b) Division and control of the movements. How Ford works. 
These are some data of how this foundation usually works. Why many intellectuals feel affection to the fundaton.  
  
Among human rights organiztions there was a polemic recently (3) that even arrived to the corporate press, around a journalist of one of those organisms that received U$S u$s 1.550.000  (1) in subsidies of that foundation.  
After that polemic, it it was known that the strategy of that foundation was the same than in the 60´s and the 70´s, and during the early 80´s: To help financially, to collaborate monetarily and to impact inside the social protest trying to isolate to the most radical sectors promoting those social sectors not so radical and less polemic, dividing – lake they made it before with the black community of the United States - and breaking into fragments the new movements of  social protest that critized the military dictatorships in the political plane and the capitalist system in the economic plane. Kirkpatrick had explained it very well. It was necessary to counteract those that "make politics" with the flag of the human rights. From there from now on the militants and leaders of organisms of Latin American human rights saw a parade  in front of their aching and saddened eyes of offers of hundred of thousand of "humanitarian" dollars of the Foundation. Among many other organisms
 , the Center of Legal and Social Studies (CELS) of the Argentina, directed today for journalist Horacio Verbitsky, began to receive this help of the Fundación FORD since 1981. And they made make it in an uninterrupted form. The offensive of the Foundation was succesfull. Disintegrate, to break into fragments, and to isolate to the most rebellious or reluctant to the reconciliation and the pardon."  
  
We repeat; it is the same strategy used against the movements of black liberation in United States, to mention a single example.  
  
For James Petras, in their I articulate where it develops the relationship between the FORD and the CIA, this strategy can be summarized in this way: "The CIA uses philanthropic foundations as the most effective conduit to channel large sums of money to Agency projects without alerting the recipients to their source. From the early 1950s to the present the CIA's intrusion into the foundation field was/and is huge. A U.S. Congressional investigation in 1976 revealed that nearly 50% of the 700 grants in the field of international activities by the principal foundations were funded by the CIA (Saunders, pp. 134-135). The CIA considers foundations such as Ford "The best and most plausible kind of funding cover" (Saunders 135). The collaboration of respectable and prestigious foundations, according to one former CIA operative, allowed the Agency to fund "a seemingly limitless range of covert action programs affecting youth groups, labor unions, universities, publishing houses and 
 other private institutions" (p. 135). The latter included "human rights" groups beginning in the 1950s to the present. One of the most important "private foundations" collaborating with the CIA over a significant span of time in major projects in the cultural Cold War is the Ford Foundation."
And there was never, for the foundation, something that is not digestible.  According to Kohan: "Everything, absolutely everything, was digestible for the agency and for the Fundación Ford if it was good to legitimate their own institutions, their projects and their publications and if it was useful to neutralize at the same time  the most radical elements and the most reluctant left movements to the cooptación". (4)  
  
 In Labriego's work, the argentinean case is mencioned and can  explains the reasson of the academic interests of the Ford Foundation. Although James Petras considers that there are ideological reassons to finance this type of projects (to form intellectuals far from the real fight and to tie them to the values, ideology and officials from the United States), there are also practical and mundane reassons to finance this type of works. Among the many mentioned cases, one of the argentinean projects gets the attention; the project "marginalidad". This is what he says: " Directed by the Argentinean sociologists José Nun, Miguel Murmis and Juan Carlos Marín this project it didn't count as the other ones three previous with the support of the Pentagon, the CIA or the Defense Department of the United States America. It only had the disinterested and altruistic financing of ...FORD Fundation (later it was added to the financing the Instituto Torcuato Di Tella). 
In his book, Stonor Saunders explainsthe narrow bond that unites to the CIA with the Ford Foundation. The objective of study of the project "Marginalidad" consisted on investigating to those social sectors that are unoccupied workers, expelled of the productive and potentially inclined to act politically on the outside of the institutions of the latin america´s traditional political parties and the Parliament."  
  
 The FF demonstrated to be quite intelligent: the unoccupied workers are today, in our country, one of the most politically  active and radical sectors.
This habit (typicall of  the cold war), is continuing at the present time, like it is demonstrated in the Argentinean case. For Petras, "The FF has in some ways refined their style of collaboration with Washington's attempt to produce world cultural domination, but retained the substance of that policy. For example the FF is very selective in the funding of educational institutions. Like the IMF, the FF imposes conditions such as the "professionalization" of academic personnel and "raising standards." In effect this translates into the promotion of social scientific work based on the assumptions , values and orientations of the U.S. empire; to have professionals de-linked from the class struggle and connected with pro-imperial U.S. academics and foundation functionaries supporting the neo- liberal model."
  
  
Can we understand from this why the Ford Foundation want´s to collaborate whit Indyemedia? Let´s see 
  
c) Why does FF desire our soul? And why we are not willing to sell it?

Evidently, Indymedia has acquiered a distinguished role in the last
years. After an explosive growth, along with antiglobalization
movements in the late 90s, it has finally reached the southern
hemisphere where it seems to be strengthening together with the
explosive political situation in our countries. Athough the areas
where the central IMCs were born are still growing strong, the axis
seems to be moving south were political processes are running into an
explosive situation; Palestine, Chiapas, Argentina, Ecuador, Bolivia,
South Africa are names that are being heard frequently in the network.

This dizzy growth can be explained by the open publishing mechanism,
horizontal decision taking methods, and dynamism that the internet
provides that has made possible that in countries with limited
technological development like ours, tools like Indymedia have become
so important.

Another issue, not less important, that enables IMC development in
southern countries is international solidarity, especially in hands of
the more developed nations' comrades. If it wasn't for our hosting
provided by our comrades in San Francisco, for the help provided by
our comrades in Canada, USA or Italy, IMC Argentina could not be
putting up its projects.

We believe that FF, not a fool at all, is right when affirming that
Indymedia is one of the few alternative communication models,
horizontal and global, that has been succesful. Does indymedia disturb
the powerful? We believe that, at least here, it certainly does, and
we know in other countries too.

It wouldn't be strange that FF, as it has done with other emerging
regional movements in Latinamerica, or in developed countries, tries
to divide or weaken IMCs, or otherwise tries to buy our souls with
money to turn us into an inoffensive network..  
Some comrades intend to convince us that due to the nature and
structure of indymedia it is impossible to co-opt or to destroy us. We
believe that indymedia's unity principles, the open publishing system
and its decentralization strengthen the network, but those things
don't make it infallible; everything that exists can perish and
indymedia is not the exception. Local problems that, once in a while,
happen and put an end to some IMCs, or countries where IMCs have
failed completely are a proof of this. Other international networks,
like Greenpeace, have fallen in the corporate network's hands; at
least here in Argentina they have become a marketing office and nobody
remembers direct actions or genuine struggles beyond company lobbying
or dealing with one or another.

Although it would be extremely difficult to put an end to indymedia, it
wouldn't be impossible for a world corporation with billions of
dollars to weaken our beautiful and passionate network or use what
they can apprehend from us against ourselves or against other
movements (5). As with the vampires, the next step if we intend to be
attacked is to open our doors and welcome them in home.

To conclude, we repeat specifically what we refer to: we are not
against recieving donations, we are not against getting grants for
individuals or projects. Yes, we are against mantaining an
institutional relationship with foundations, more with global
foundations, and mostly with Ford.

We know that in capitalism, corporations act in search for profits,
over that basis they build a domination scheme that reaches all
aspects of lives. When FF offers us a subsidy our second thought (our
first is nausea) is that they want to get something out of us. Many
times, mostly in USA, some corporations use donations to reduce taxes;
this is not the case of FF. They aim for higher goals, as we hope we
have demonstrated in this letter. We don't underestimate peoples'
enemies as to think that they are offering indymedia something without
expecting nothing in return. It is not strange that they are trying
with us. We don't let them in.

Esta es una carta que refleja el debate colectivo de Indymedia Argentina,  con respecto a la noticias de que se estaría tramitando un subsidio de la Fundación Ford para financiar encuentros regionales de Indymedia. -La opinión de los activistas en la Argentina  
  
Nosotros recibimos con sorpresa y preocupación la noticia de que existe una idea de realizar un encuentro internacional de indymedia financiado por la fundación Ford.  
En nuestro país, la fundación Ford es motivo de polémicas permanentes, y en la mayoría de los movimientos, el que recibe un subsidio de esa fundación es señalado con un dedo. Para indymedia argentina, aceptar un subsidio de esa fundación sería en primer lugar un suicidio; al trascender la noticia, el lugar que en base a un año y medio de esfuerzo se ha ganado indymedia aquí, sería rapidamente tirada a la basura. Y con justa razón.  
Creemos que indymedia argentina es una herramienta que está siendo utilizada por demasiados movimientos, que ha tenido un papel fundamental en el último años, como para sacrificarla en el altar de las corporaciones.  
  
  
El nombre Ford se asocía aquí automáticamente  a la última dictadura (2); todos los operativos del ejército para secuestrar y luego torturar y asesinar a 30.000 personas fueron realizados en coches Ford donados directamente desde Estados Unidos. Hoy mismo, al cruzarse en la calle con un Ford Falcon de color verde, cualquier persona lo asocia inmediatemente con los operativos ilegales del ejército y la policía.  
  
Muchos compañeros nos señalaron que "la fundación Ford era independiente de la empresa Ford", lo cuál puede ser cierto, pero no suficiente para los miles de personas que aquí detestan a la ford. Aquí en la argentina se los conoce publicamente como parte de lo mismo, y de hecho han venido compariendo la misma estrategía, de apoyar la política de Estados Unidos, sobre todo en lo concerniente a la impunidad de los militares que cometieron el último genocidio.  
  
Creemos que no hace falta aclarar que la Fundación fue creada por Henry Ford, un ardiente ideologo del nazismo, reconocido incluso por Hitler como uno de sus "inspiradores". Y es una fundación, como bien denunció James Petras, que tiene una estrecha relación con la CIA, financiando  cientos de  proyectos de esa central de inteligencia, algunos de ellos destinados a estudiar la situación de los movimientos sociales en el tercer mundo, y otros -la mayoría-  directamente  para intervenir en la política de esos movimientos.  
  
Gran parte de la política de la Fundación Ford en nuestro país a la salida de la dictadura militar estuvo destinada a debilitar el movimiento de derechos humanos  que se oponian a la impunidad de los militares. De hecho, utlizaron la misma estrategia que utilizaron con el movimiento negro en estados unidos. (ver parte 2)  
  
Nosotros, como los organismos de derechos humanos que no negociaron con la sangre de los caidos, como las organizaciones de desocupados y de trabajadores que mantienen la autonomía, rechazamos tocar un sólo peso de esas manos manchadas con la sangre de nuestros compañeros. Las Madres de Plaza de Mayo enseñaron que ellas no son madres de individuos, sino de 30.000 desaparecidos. Nosotros también  somos hijos, hermanos, nietos, primos, amigos y compañeros de 30.000.  Llevamos, como toda persona conciente, la memoria de esos  compañeros en el corazón, y la fuerza que de ese amor emana nos permite afrontar lo que hacemos todos los días. Invitamos a todos los compañeros de todos los indymedia del mundo a adoptar en sus corazones a nuestros compañeros desaparecidos; los invitamos a rechazar cualquier tipo de relación institucional con estos complices de la dictadura, resguardando también el buen nombre de indymedia argentina en particular, como parte de la red global.  
  
  
No se trata de un "purismo" infaltil como nos dijieron algunos compañeros de otros países; nosotros estamos a favor de recibir donaciones, y de hecho las necesitamos porque estamos a punto de perder nuestra oficina en Buenos Aires, y  las necesidades de los colectivos que se están formando en el interior del país son enormes y urgentes. Pero consideramos a Indymedia una herramienta que ha cobrado demasiada importancia, demasiada trascendencia, que es  patrimonio de las decenas de movimientos que la utilizan en nuestro país, como para arriesgarla por algunos dólares. Y preferimos, honestamente, no tener un centavo pero poder seguir mirando a los ojos a las miles de personas y movimientos con las que trabajamos todos los días. Que quede claro que de lo que estamos hablando es de que estamos en contra de mantener relaciones institucionales con corporaciones, y con Ford, esa mierda facista, en primer lugar.  
No se trata tampoco de un problema local; asociar el nombre de Ford, aunque sea en lo más mínimo, con el de Indymedia, es algo que no solo es un deshonor para nosotros, también es un peligro para nuestra propia existencia.  
  
  
  
  
  
a) Que es lo que propone Ford  
Según nos contaron compañeros en el IRC, la conversación con la Fundación Ford estaba interesada en financiar encuentros de indymedia por los siguientes movitos y de la siguiente forma.  
  
"they said that Indymedia is the only  global 'organization' that has a 'successful - self organized - grassroots - horizontal organization... and so they want to help us develop our organizational structure so that they can share it with other organizations they work with - thats what they say "  
" they said they ONLY wanted fund our organizational development. not hardware - not paying people - but paying for people to travel so that we can meet face to face more - that was basically what they said at the end of the meeting.  Lamentablemente no encontramos documentos públicos al respecto, así que no basamos en el testimonio de compañeros de absoluta confianza para nostoros. A lo único que tuvimos acceso fue a una discusión oral en la reunión latina realizada en Buenos Aires y a varias conversaciones por IRC. El testimonio de este compañero,  sin embargo, alcanza para entender cuales pueden ser los verdaderos motivos para esta fundación de estar interesada en "colaborar" con Indymedia.  
  
  
b) División y control de los movimientos. Como trabaja  Ford.  
Estos son algunos datos de como suele funcionar esta fundación por la que muchos intelectuales sienten cariño.  
  
Entre los organismos de DD HH, hubo recientemente una polémica (3) que llegó incluso a la prensa corporativa, alrededor de un periodista de uno de esos organismos que recibió U$S u$s 1.550.000  (1) en  subsidios de esa fundación.  
A raíz de esa polémica, trascendió que parte de la estrategia de esa fundación, se basaba en "Como en los '60 y en los '70, durante los primeros '80 la Fundación FORD apeló nuevamente a la misma estrategia política: "Ayudar financieramente", "colaborar monetariamente" e incidir dentro de la protesta social intentando aislar a los sectores más radicales promoviendo a los sectores sociales más dialoguistas y menos contestatarios, dividiendo –como lo habían hecho antes con los negros de Estados Unidos- y fragmentando los nuevos movimientos de protesta social críticos de las dictaduras militares en el plano político y del sistema capitalista en el plano económico. Kirkpatrick lo había explicado muy bien. Había que contrarrestar a aquellos que "politizaban" la bandera de los derechos humanos. Desde allí en adelante los militantes y dirigentes de organismos de derechos humanos latinoamericanos vieron desfilar delante de sus doloridos y entristecidos ojos las ofertas de cientos de m
   
 iles de dólares "humanitarios" de la Fundación. Entre muchos otros organismos, el Centro de Estudios Legales y Sociales (CELS) de la Argentina, dirigido hoy por el periodista Horacio Verbitsky, comenzó a recibir cálidamente esta ayuda de la Fundación FORD desde 1981 en adelante. Lo hizo en forma ininterrumpida. La ofensiva de la Fundación había recalado. Comenzaba entonces la vieja y conocida tarea de disgregar, fragmentar, deslegitimar y aislar a los más rebeldes o reacios a la reconciliación y el perdón."  
  
Repetimos; es la misma estrategia utilizada contra los movimientos de liberación negra en Estados Unidos, por citar un solo ejemplo.  
  
Para James Petras, en su articulo donde desarrolla la relación entre la FORD y la CIA, esta estrategia se resume así: "La CIA utiliza fundaciones filantrópicas como el conducto más efectivo para canalizar grandes sumas de dinero a proyectos de la Agencia sin alertar a los destinatarios sobre su origen. Desde principios de los años 50 al presente, la intrusión de la CIA en el campo de las fundaciones fue y es inmensa. Una investigación del congreso de EE.UU. en 1976, reveló que cerca de un 50% de las 700 subvenciones otorgadas en el campo de las actividades internacionales por las principales fundaciones fue financiado por la CIA (Saunders, pp. 134-135). La CIA considera a fundaciones como Ford "la mejor y más plausible forma de cobertura para financiamientos (Saunders 135).1 La colaboración de fundaciones respetables y prestigiosas, según un antiguo agente de la CIA, permitió que la Agencia financiara una "variedad aparentemente ilimitada de programas de acción clandestina qu
   
 e afectan a grupos juveniles, sindicatos, universidades, editoriales y otras instituciones privadas." (p. 135). Estas últimas incluyeron a grupos de "derechos humanos" desde comienzos de los años 50 al presente. Una de las "fundaciones privadas" más importantes que han colaborado con la CIA durante un período prolongado en proyectos significativos en la Guerra Fría cultural es la Fundación Ford."  
  
Y nunca hubo, para la fundación, algo que no sea digerible Según Kohan: "Todo, absolutamente todo, era digerible por la agencia y por la Fundación Ford si servía para legitimar las instituciones propias, los proyectos y las publicaciones por ellos impulsados y si era útil para neutralizar al mismo tiempo a los elementos más radicales y a los movimientos de izquierda más reacios a la cooptación." (4)  
  
 En el trabajo de Labriego, se cita un caso argentino que también  puede explicar el por qué de los intereses "academicos" de la fundación Ford. Si bien James Petras considera que existen movitos ideologicos para financiar este tipo de proyectos (formar intelectuales alejados de la lucha real y ligarlos a los valores, ideologìa y funcionarios de Estados Unidos) también existen movitos prácticos y mundanos para financiar este tipo de trabajos. Entre los muchos casos citados, uno de los proyectos argentinos llaman la atención; el proyecto marginalidad. El lo cuenta así: " Dirigido por los sociólogos argentinos José Nun, Miguel Murmis y Juan Carlos Marín este proyecto no contó como los otros tres anteriores con el apoyo del Pentágono, la CIA o el Departamento de Defensa de los Estados Unidos de Norteamérica. Solamente contó con el financiamiento "desinteresado" y "altruista" de...la Fundación FORD (más tarde se agregó al financiamiento el Instituto Torcuato Di Tella de la Argent
   
 ina). A lo largo de su libro Stonor Saunders se explaya extensamente sobre la estrechísima ligazón que unía a la CIA con la Fundación Ford, (tal es así -agrega en idéntico sentido Mudrovcic- que cuando deja de estar financiada por la CIA Mundo Nuevo para a recibir inmediatamente fondos de la Fundación Ford...). El objetivo de estudio del proyecto Marginalidad consistía en investigar a aquellos sectores sociales de obreros desocupados  expulsados del ámbito productivo y potencialmente proclives a actuar políticamente por fuera de la institucionalidad de los partidos políticos tradicionales latinoamericanos y el Parlamento."  
  
Ni que hablar de que la FF demostró tener aquí ni un pelo de tontería: los trabajadores desocupados son hoy, en nuestro país, uno de los sectores políticamente mas activos y radicales.  
  
Esta práctica, que tuvo su apogeo en la guerra fría, se continua en la actualidad, como queda demostrado en el caso argentino. Para Petras, actualmente " La FF ha refinado de cierta manera su estilo de colaboración con el intento de Washington de lograr la dominación cultural mundial. Como el FMI, la FF impone condiciones como ser la "profesionalización" del personal académico y la "mejora de los estándares". En la realidad, esto se traduce en la promoción del trabajo científico social basado en las suposiciones, valores y orientaciones del imperio de EE.UU.; tener profesionales desligados de la lucha de clases y relacionados con los académicos y funcionarios pro-imperiales de EE.UU., partidarios del modelo neoliberal."  
  
  
¿Se puede desprender de aquí una de las razones por las cuales Ford quiere "colaborar" con Indymedia?. Veamos.  
  
  
c) Por qué la Ford quiere nuestro alma. Y por qué no estamos dispuestos a venderla.  
  
Evidentemente Indymedia ha cobrado un papel destacado en los últimos años. Luego del explosivo crecimiento, junto al movimiento antiglobalización a finales de los 90, también ha llegado al sur, donde parece hacerse fuerte al calor de las convulsiones que viven nuestros países. Sin debilitar los centros donde indymedia cobró vida, el eje parece estar corriendose mas al sur, donde se vienen dando los procesos convulsionados; argentina, Palestina, Chiapas, Ecuador, Bolivia, Sudafríca, son los nombres que mas se comienzan a escuchar en la red.  
Ese crecimiento, muchas veces explosivo, se da precisamente porque el modelo de publicación abierta, los métodos de organización horizontales, y el dinamismo que permite internet han posibilitado que incluso en paises donde el nuestro, donde el desarrollo técnológico no es precisamente grande, herramientas como indymedia alcancen tanta trascendencia.  
El otro aspecto, no menos importante,  que permite el desarrollo de indymedia en los paìses del sur, es la solidaridad internacional, concretamente de los compañeros de los países mas desarrollados. Sin tener la página alojada por los compañeros de IMC  San Francisco, sin la ayuda de los compañeros de Canada, Estados Unidos e Italia, por lo menos aquì indymedia no podría hacer todo lo que hace.  
Creemos que la FF, que de tonta no tiene un pelo, tiene razón cuando señala que indymedia es uno de los pocos modelos de comunicación alternativa, horizontal y global que se demuestra exitoso.  
¿Molesta hoy indymedia al poder?. Nosotros creemos que aquí, por lo menos si lo hace, y sabemos que en varios paìses también.  
No sería extraño que la Ford, como hizo e intentó hacer con varios movimientos surgidos a nivel regional en Lationamerica,  o en los paises desarrollados, intente o bien dividir y debilitar a indymedia, o bien comprar nuestro alma con dinero para convertirnos en una red inofensiva.  
  
Algunos compañeros nos intentaron convencer que por la naturaleza y la forma de organización de indymedia es imposible de comprar o destruir. Nosotros creemos que los principios de unidad de indymedia, el sistema de publicación y la descentralización hacen que la red sea mucho mas fuerte, pero no infalible; todo lo que existe es digno de perecer, e indymedia no es ajena a ellos. Los problemas locales, que de vez en cuando suceden y dan por tierra con algún indymedia, o los paises donde ha fracaso en jugar un papel importante son prueba de ello. Otras redes internacionales, como Green Peace, han caido en la red de las corporaciones; por lo menos aquì en lationamerica se han convertido en una oficina de marketing, y ya nadie recuerda las acciones directas y la lucha genuina, mas allà del lobby de las empresas y los negociados con unos u otros.  
  
Y si bien serìa muy dificil terminar con la red, tampoco sería imposible para una corporación con miles de millones de dólares debilitar al máximo nuestra hermosa y apasionante red mundial o utlizar lo que puedan aprender de nosortos en contra de nosotros mismos o de otros movimientos (5).  Como los vampiros, el primer paso para nos ataquen  es abrirles la puerta e invitarlos a pasar a nuestra casa.  
  
Recordamos, por último,  especificamente a lo que nos referimos: No estamos en contra de recibir donaciones, no estamos en contra de realizar grants para individuos o proyectos. De lo que estamos en contra es de mantener una relación institucional, y mucho menos global con fundaciones, y menos que menos con Ford.  
   
Nosotros sabemos que en el capitalismo las corporaciones actuan solamente en función de las ganancias, y en base a ello tejen un entramado de dominación que abarca todos los aspectos de la vida. Cuando FF nos ofrece un subsidio,  lo segundo que se nos viene a la mente (lo primero es el asco que sentimos por ellos) es que es lo que quieren ganar con nosotros. Muchas veces, sobre todo en Estados Unidos, algunas corporaciones utilizan las donaciones para reducir impuestos; no es este el caso de FF; ellos buscan objetivos superiores, como esperamos haber demostrado en esta carta.  Subestimamos poco a los enemigos del pueblo como para creer que ofrecen algo a indymedia a cambio de nada.  No es extraño que se la tomen con nosotros. No los dejemos entrar.
