Hopefully, folks had a chance to hear some of the panel discussions
streaming today from American University, in Washington DC, as part of
Media Democracy Week. NYC and DC IMC's played integral roles in Friday's
FCC protest and the teach-in events this afternoon, as did the folks at
Media Tank. See Media Tank's report back, below, to the extensive list of
event endorsers -- which included the Seattle IMC and The Tablet!

===========================================
Dear Angels and Friends,
Now that we have landed from our flight to the FCC yesterday, March 22nd, I
wanted to take this opportunity to congratulate ourselves and share with
those who were unable to be there with us. (This is only going to a
portion of the endorsers, so feel free to forward if you wish - apologies
if you receive this more than once.) Huge shout-outs to all who helped
organize, participated in, and endorsed this wacky and righteous endeavor!
This is just the beginning...
HOLY RECAP
The FCC headquarters is located in an unforsaken area, and less than an
ideal site for a large public gathering. It was extremely cold and windy,
which made it difficult to set up our stuff. There were a few times people
had to chase after wings, halos and various other props that got carried
off in the gusts, and even blew over a big camera tripod of one of the
reporters. The Angel choir sang as more angels, press, and police arrived.
Seven police cars were parked directly in front of the FCC building, with
several others on hand nearby. We were repeatedly hassled by authorities
for everything from stepping on the landscape gravel (trespassing) to
disturbing the peace. Not counting cops, we probably had 60-75 costumed
and plain-clothes angels, 15(?) or so reporters.
After a rousing send-off from Reverend Billy, the Angels went to deliver
the "Public Interest Crystal Ball" to Chairman Powell, followed by the
entire press corps. Riot cops with sticks prevented them from entering the
building. (Can you believe they'd hit an Angel??) Upon the return of the
Angels and press, we began the program of speakers, all of whom were
eloquent in their various messages for media democracy. Many thanks to
Jeff Chester, Deedee Halleck, Richard Turner, Terry O'Neill, Warcry, Peter
Hart and Reverend Billy. Our program was also rudely interurrupted by the
Mya Cash (aka Jenn Pozner) and the Billionaires for More Media Mergers, a
wholly owned subsidiary of the Billionaires for Bush and Bloomberg.
The hostile weather was befitting of any good mythology of Good vs. Evil,
when the protagonists challenge the villians on their own land. We nearly
froze our wings off, but our spirits were high and determination strong.
Surprisingly, most of the reporters endured the cold to hear everything we
had to say, and do interviews.
The media may have access to the hearts and minds of the American public,
as Warcry pointed out in her *fierce* delivery, but we proved yesterday
that they cannot control our Imaginations.
We even came up with a great line for our press follow-up:
On March 22nd The Angels of the Public Interest waited to meet with
Chairman Powell. We waited all afternoon, but he did not come.
SANGRIA & STRATEGY
After warming our wings at the IMC-DC, several dozen Angels crowded into a
tiny spanish restaurant, where we dined, toasted our success, made new
friends, and began thinking about where we go from here. The good folks in
DC put together a party for the evening and a teach-in for Sat. afternoon,
where there is more opportunity for networking and dialogue. After we all
have a chance to catch our breaths from this experience, we'll continue to
discuss next steps for this campaign.
Until then, Angels, rest up, be safe and keep up the good fight.
