Hi everyone,

An update from the new-imc working group:

1) WELCOME IMC-PORTUGAL and IMC-SOUTH AFRICA

Imc-process recently approved both Imc-Portugal and Imc-South Africa. As
of this moment the South Africa site is up, though it's not yet part of the
cities list. The Portugal site will need portugal.indymedia.org to point
to www.azine.org and be listed on the cities list as well.

2) IMCs soon to come

The new-imc working group is currenty in the process of approving
applications from:

IMC-Adelaide (Australia):
-- personal introduction:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2001-August/000868.html
-- response to membership criteria:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2001-August/000869.html

IMC-Nigeria:
-- personal introduction:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2001-August/000865.html
-- response to membership criteria:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2001-August/000864.html

3) Other IMCs in the works

-- Norway's membership criteria responses have been approved but hasn't
sent a personal introduction along yet.
-- Uraguay seems rarin' to go -- they've had a national convening meeting
and seem ready to get their site rolling
-- Danbury, CT has responded and they seem to be working well to organize
independent media activists in their community

4) New applications have come in the last month from:
Pittsburgh, Eugene, Central Europe (interested in perhaps using IMC-Prague
as a stepping stone to a regional site), Ecuador. Visit the
new-imc@indymedia.org list archives through http://lists.indymedia.org for
more information on each. Also, the aspiring IMC-Palestine group
(http://www.virtualpalestine.org) is communicating with IMC-Israel about
the possibility of working together to do some kind of joint project.

5) Issues:

-- Turkey. Visit the new-imc@indymedia.org list archives through
http://lists.indymedia.org for the most recent communications from
Anarchist Platform and Turkey. A message went to the A-infos news service
asking about A-Platform's otonomedya.org site, which looks very much like
an IMC site, wondering if they'd been given the status of IMC-Turkey. They
haven't been, so the new-imc group clarified that. A-Platform has reponded
and now we're engaged in some communication.

-- Revising documents. The introductory packet we've been sending to
aspiring IMCs has been pretty short on some important information, such as
a clear list of what a new-imcs steps are to become part of the network.
We're starting to revise them, and perhaps will resend them along with a
tech faq, a general faq and more "how to" documents.

-- Revising newimc.indymedia.org: The information there doesn't reflect
the current reality of how to become a new IMC and we're going to do
something about that.

Hope all is well,

Jay
