===========================IMC-Tech Summary==========================

Hard Drive / Server Problems
Stallman's hard drive filled up on the 2nd. We made the
usual rounds clearing out some unnecessary files that wern't
needed but there wasn't to much to clear. When the drives
fill up people have problems posting, pages display
blank, and other bad stuff happens.

Donations To IMC-Tech
In response to the hard drive problem we've received around
$1370 in the last couple days through the techdonate.indy
page. We should use this money to help quickly support getting
what we need for stallman and other imc's that are getting
servers. The donated money is sitting in our pay pal account
until it can be transferred to an imc-tech account.

Indymedia.us
Looks like we'll be able to register indymedia.us
	in a couple of months.

Sarai Mail Server Update
Micah, Deanna, and crew are working on moving over to the
new mail server soon. Until we get off turtle it can
sometimes take many hours for mail to go out to a list.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-December/006350.html

RSS, Features, And Syndication
There has been more continuing discussion about fixing
our rss feeds and other cool syndication projects.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-November/006101.html

Indymirror
Idan wrote a little python program to automate pulling
indymedia content off of sites running active for
	mirroring and syndication purposes.
	http://tech.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=302

Indycate
	More indymedia syndication projects...
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-November/006139.html
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-November/006171.html

Indymedia Technology Options Site
If you want to know about all the different programs and
software packages that have been developed to run and support
indymedia sites and what you can choose for your IMC then
check out the Technology Options Site. Also if you're working
on an indymedia related project, be sure to mosey over and
	add your project.
	http://www.bandwidthcoop.org/imc/tech/FrontPage

Automating Cities List
For IMC's not on stallman you can keep your cities list
up to date by using a cron job to grab
	http://indymedia.org/cities.inc

European IMC-Tech And Hackmeetings
During the Chaos Computer Club Congress in Berlin
between christmas and new years there will be a European
	imc-tech meeting.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-europa-tech

The Italians are organizing a cool hackers/politics
	congress called hackmeeting.
	https://www.autistici.org/mailman/listinfo/euro-hkm

sftp For Secure ftp
Stefani installed openssh 3.0 so everybody with an sftp
client can now do secure ftp without either using confusing
scp or insecure normal ftp. Thanks Stefani!

Updating Colors / Graphics On www.Indy
Mark from SF and others want to engage in a face lift of
www.indy to make it up to date, pretty, readable, and
cool. I'm sure other graphics types would be welcome in
collaboration. Email mark and get on the imc-presenation
	list.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-November/006219.html

IMC List Archives And Search Engines
The lists by default are indexed by search engines
sometimes people complain about their info getting listed.
Basically by default all open lists are archived by
the engines. Normally this allows people to easily search
through the archives. Some lists don't want this because
they need to protect people's privacy. We can close your list
to search engines if you want.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-December/006285.html

Logs.Indymedia.Org
They traffic logs aren't run through analog regularly, many
imc's want this. It's a great job for somebody to do.
The thread below even explains what needs to be done.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-December/006275.html

Radical 0.1
Idan the productive is at it again, this time he's got a
front end framework for active xml-rpc in ruby.
	http://tech.indymedia.org/front.php3?article_id=307

Dealing With Email Viruses
Email viruses almost exclusively affect people who are very
politically incorrect! To run Microsoft Outlook Express and be an
activist is like being an environmentalist who drives an SUV.
Don't do it! Microsoft is evil and email viruses are karma's way
of punishing people who use microsoft programs. Needless to say
there has been a fair amount of discussion about how to deal with
all the bad activists who are using virus prone software.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-tech/2001-December/006250.html

Drop - Indy Web Radio Project
Drop is a web radio project that started out of the web radio
collaborations during Genoa, S29, and the WTO Qatar Project.
Basically it's a way for various IMC's to help collaborate
to add and schedule programs on a 24/7 web radio project.
It's cool shit, and it's up so you can listen now.

================================Non-Tech Related=======================

Media Politics Group Meets in Philly
There are tentative plans for the media politics discussion
group to have a meeting on the 12th of January in Philly
to continue discussions around developing critiques of the
FCC, corporate media, and articulating a strategy for
	extending indymedia's media politics future.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/mediapolitics

Reading Empire Discussion List
Empire is the much talked about book by Antonio Negri
and Michael Hardt about globalization and resistance.
A group of us have been reading it and want to discuss
the implications to the anti-globalization struggle
and our indymedia organizing. We are looking for other
	people to join us.
	http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/empire

D14 in Belgium
Next week there will be a very large anti-globalization
protest in Brussels. There are tons of indymedia related
projects converging to make it a riotous good time.
If you're in Europe you should go, if you're not, I'm
sure they could use remote support work. If you work at
a community or pirate radio station hook up with them
to play mp3's or the live audio coverage. I believe they
intend to have all coverage be in English, Dutch, and
French. The Belgium IMC also needs money to help cover
	the costs during D14.
	http://Belgium.indymedia.org

Argentina IMC
Argentina is facing a sever economic crisis and it's being
shit upon by the IMF. IMCistas have been running around
helping workers in occupied factories write their own
stories, covering strikes, and generally doing a fine job.
The IMF wants to bail out the broke government the IMC's
also broke and we need to provide a little fiscal
mutual-aid to help the IMC counter the IMF's evil plans.
Consider having your local IMC do a fundraiser for
the Argentines. During the crisis they've been producing
reports in both Spanish and English.
	http://Argentina.indymedia.org

West Coast IMC Gathering
Vancouver will be hosting a West Coast IMC gathering
January 24-27, 2002. They invite IMC's from the West Coast
and beyond for three days of workshops, networking,
	and indymedia fun.
	http://Vancouver.indymedia.org./front.php3?article_id=6735

IMC-Finance / Money Issues
By accident the IMC Finance Working group raised $45,000.
Don't ask how, it's a long story, and what can we say,
accidents happen. :) They aren't empowered to do anything
with it, nor do we have a functional decision making
process for it. The group has given out a few small amounts
from the global funds but is uncomfortable doing more. We
need more imc's on the list and creative ways to use this
money effectively without becoming a centralized ngo.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-finance

Philly IMC Buys A Building
The Philly IMC is buying a building. They got a three
story building in West Philly for $15,000 at an auction.
They've been doing mad fundraising over the last few weeks
but they need more money to make their goal by the 14th.
Once they get the space they expect it require another
$15k in repairs. The Philly IMC rocks, they already have
a licensed radio station, and now they're getting a buiding.
	http://phillyimc.org/space/

Rainbow Gathering Indymedia
The rainbow tribe folks are working on setting up an imc to
cover the 2002 US national rainbow gathering.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/rainbow-imc/2001-October/000000.html

IMC Womens List
There is an imc womens list which has been discussing
gender relations, womens issues, sexism and more issues
related to indymedia and the movement in general. They
started out of meetings during the DC anti-war convergence
in September. There is also talk of having a topical page
which links to womens related articles posted on indymedia
	sites.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-women

IMC World Social Forum
There is a list for coordinating coverage of the World
Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil in January. The
Brazilian IMCistas have asked that all indymedia folks
coming down to the WSF get on the list. Last year there
were people from half a dozen imc's but we never even
had a full meeting. This year it's hoped that we can
coordinate much more comprehensive coverage of the event.
	http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-wsf

Book: Media Activist Manual
Han Soete and some folks from the Belgium IMC crew are
working on a book about media activism. They want
to find people to contribute articles and feedback
on their project. Email han@indymedia.org for the
	scoop.

Getting Contacts For All IMC's
The Communcications Working Group is trying to compile
contacts for all the IMC's out there. If you're not on
the list or your info isn't up to date then please update
	it.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------
The IMC-Tech summary is a semi-regular update on the activities
of the amorphous global imc-tech collective. By presenting a summary
of some of the discussions and activities of imc-tech we hope to inform
the larger indymedia community of our activities. This will help
promote transparency and lubricate the gears of our internal democratic
processes. All IMC mailinglists and working groups should be producing
regular summaries of their activities!

This and other summries of indymedia activity can be had at the
imc-summaries list: lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-summaries
