Well so far i'm still in the dark about the container getting out of
customs in Quito. I think things are being resolved but there is some
confusion. I think they'll figure it out.
Regarding the donated computers from the Law Firm in LA. They called me
this morning and said that they are giving us 100 computers, not the 40
we'd expected. This is great news. We thought we might be getting some 17
inch monitors but it turns out we are getting more computers instead. This
is really good news. The boxes are Pentium II's at 200 and 233 mhz with
some ram and maybe hard drives. This is a whole class above the boxes that
are in Quito.
This puts us at 180 computers. 80 which we got from Seattle and are now at
freegeek in Portland, and 100 from LA which we'll be fixing up in Oakland
at ACCRC. ACCRC is moving to a new warehouse in Berkeley soon so this
might cause us some logistical problems.
On the shipping front. I am at a bit of a loss. Both Eddy and I are going
to be on the road after we fix up the boxes in January. We basically need
somebody to coordinate the paperwork and shipping. They need to be able to
get the various things written and signed off and taken to various offices
and consolates. If we can't find soembody to coordinate it i guess the
palettes can sit at the warehouse in oakland until either eddy or i get
back to the bay area when ever that might be. The process is time
consuming mostly because you need to track lots of stuff down and keep at
it over weeks or months. And there are lots of paniced phone calls when we
realize we've done something wrong.
The other problem is fundraising. It's $2800 to ship from Oakland to the
east coast of south america. We can assume that it is at least $3000 in
expenses just to get the container out of customs and to a warehouse in
the recieving country. In addtion we've got probally $500 in expenses on
the US end. For the trucks to get all the computers to Oakland.
So assuming we don't provide any funds for training or dispersement in the
south we need $6300. The grant to OSI would cover that and provide a lot
of setting up labs and doing trainings. But there are two problems. One we
haven't heard back from OSI so we don't know if we're going to get it. And
secondly some people object to the source of the funds and the process.
So thinking in a problem solving mode. We need to come up with $6300 for
this shipment to happen. Any ideas?
in solidarity,
evan
