Last nite "some roving imcistas (evan, joshua, jeff)" sat in the Seattle General Meeting while we discussed the hundred some computers donated by a school district.
By tonite they, and the computers, should be safe in Portland. The computers will be part of the next shipping container to be sent.
Our efforts will be to find more, and send them through the same restoration projects. Perhaps by then there will be wider knowledge of the project, and requests from other areas. of the network.
S.Africa has mentioned (2 meter?) packet radio on this list. I learned last nite that, long ago, a chain of packet repeaters was built through the Andes. We could only speculate on the current condition and use of that NGO project. But if such infrastructure were still in place, it could greatly facilitate networking. It would have the advantage of not needing telephone or cable connections. In Fact, it would operate separate from internet connections, it would be a W.A.N.- wide area network.
Something to think about, and if anybody has details etcetc, please forward me.
We also heard of the need for digital cameras, and HI-8 in particular was named. Any opinions?
Another thread was the funding for the large shipping costs we will continue to incur. It was agreed by all that the project is appealing to potential donors, and might benefit from being publicized. One obvious idea would be stories from the prior recipients. Features and Pay-Pal donations are obvious directions to take that.
We could hope to find a computer donator with the resources to ship? that would be fabulous. Hewlet.Packard. comes to mind, as I have heard some of their people describe projects in the Carribean.
Thanks school zone and thanks "wandering imc-istas."
Walt
