Ok folks here's an update about both containers.

We are having an EMERGENCY IRC MEETING on irc.indymedia.org in the #boxes
channel at Thurs 1AM GMT. That's Wed 11:00 PM in Brasil. In Buenos Aires it's
Wed 10:00 PM and on the West Coast of the US it's Wed 5:00 PM. Please everybody
who can help come to the meeting.

First Ecuador. They have worked out the paperwork and can get the container out
of customs as soon as the $2000 which was transfered to them today arrives. It
looks like due to dificulties with paperwork and burocracies they are going to
come in about $1500 to $2000 over budget. This is money that some of the
organizations recieving the computers have fronted. We collectivly need to
figure out if we can find funds in the north to remimburse them.

Argentina:
	Oakland: There are about 160 computers, over 210 monitors, boxes of keyboards,
mice, hubs, modems, printers, and scanners all finished up. They are wrapped and
on paletts ready to go.

	Portland: 25 Computers finished up and ready to go. There are an additional 60
pentium II's which need ram. The Portland IMC is looking in to doing a
fundraiser for the money to buy ram for those 60 boxes. I believe but am not
sure, that the portland folks also have their keyboards, mice, monitors, and
power cables. If not we will need to test more at accrc (oakland). We still need
to get the portland computers to oakland and on to 

This means that with the extra ram, we have at least 245 computers ready to go
for the shipment. Because we did a better job at searching out donations of
computers, these boxes range from 100mhz to 450mhz with a  majority of them
being faster than 200mhz with 128 megs of ram.

Problems:
	1. Time. We have been storing the paletts at ACCRC's Berkeley warehouse. It
turns out that they need us to get the paletts out of there very quickly and we
can only keep them there for at most a couple of weeks. This is a BIG problem.
To keep the flow of computers coming for future projects we NEED to keep ACCRC
happy. One possible solution, which seems a longshot to me, is to ask one of the
activist warehouses near by. (There are two Spaz Collective warehouses within a
couple blocks of the berkeley warehouse.) If we could find some non-accrc place
to store the paletts then we'd have more time. Remember this is about 8 metric
tones of equiptment which takes up a space 8 feet wide, 40 feet long, and 7 feet
high.  If we can't find a storrage place then we need money and to ship in the
next week or two! 

	2. Money. We don't have it. Shipping alone from Oakland to Buenos Aires is
$2800. With Ecuador as a marker, we expect that we will need $3500 for fees and
expenses. In addition we have the shipping within the US. Seattle -> Portland
$140, LA -> Oakland $250, and  Portland -> Oakland $200. That means we need at
least $7000 to cover shipping of the container. That does not include any
expenses on the receiving end to get boxes to bolivia, chile, uruguay, rosario,
and southern brasil. 
	We have put in a grant as part of the Tactical Media Fund to Soros´s Open
Society Institute (OSI). Which would cover these costs and give us a total of
$15000 which we could use to do trainings and setup media lab's. OSI has not
gotten back to us on our grant application, so we don't even know if we can get
money from them for this project. 
	Argentina Indymedia (Buenos Aires really), wrote a long poetic email in spanish
only in which they try and explain a vision for how they want money to be raised
and dealt with in the network. My understanding is that they said they want the
computers but not funded by OSI because they don't like who George Soros is. I
don't like him either, but i think we should take his money. They said they may
get around to translating it in a few weeks, if they feel like it.
	Given the time and money i'm at a loss. I don't know what we should do. 

	3. Paperwork / Customs. So far ernesto and hendrix of the Rosario Indymedia
Center have been working with Nodo Tau to try and find a way to recieve the
computers without paying taxes. We know we can get them listed as refurbished
which will help. And we will write a letter of donation. But there are still
huge gaps. I don't at all feel comfortable that we know all the steps we need to
take to get this shipment through customs.

puedan ayudar vengan a la reunión.

Primero Ecuador. Ell@s han trabajado en los papeles y tendran el contenedor
fuera de la aduana tan pronto como los $2000 les sean transferidos hoy. Parece
que más alla de las dificultades con los papeles y las burocracias ell@s van a
necesitar pagar entre $1500 y $2000 más de lo planificado. Este es dinero que
algunas de las organizaciones que reciben las computadoras han afrontado.
Nosotr@s colectivamente necesitamos ver si podemos encontrar fondos en el norte
para reintegrarles el dinero.

teclados, ratones, hubs, modems, impresoras, y scanners todos prontos. Ellos
estan empaquetadas y en las paletas prontos para irse.

	Portland: 25 Computadoras terminadas y prontas para irse. Hay ademas 60 pentium
IIs que necesitan ram. El Imc Portland esta pensando en hacer campaña para
obtener dinero para comprar ram para esas 60 equipos. Creo pero no estoy segura,
que la gente de portland también tienen teclados, ratones, monitores y cables de
poder. Si no nosotr@s vamos a tener que buscar más en accrc (oakland). Aún
tenemos que llevaar las computadoras desde portland a oakland.

Esto significa que con ram extra, tendriamos al menos 245 computadoras prontas
para ser embarcadas. Porque hicimos un mejor trabajo al buscar donaciones de
computadoras, estas cajas van desde los 100mhz a 450mhz con la mayoría de ellas
más rápidas que 200mhz con 128 megs de ram.

Problemas:
	1. Tiempo. Hemos estado guardando las paletas en la casa de ACCRC en Berkeley.
Ell@s necesitan que saquemos las paletas de alli muy rápido y sólo podemos
dejarlas alli a lo máximo un par de semanas. Esto es un GRAN problema. Para
mantener el flujo de computadoras para proyectos futuros necesitamos seguir en
buenas relaciones con ACCRC. Una posible solución, que me parece distante, es
preguntar auna de las casas de activistas cercanas. (Hay dos Colectivos Spaz a
unas cuadras de distancia de la casa de berkeley.) Si pudieramos encontrar algún
lugar no-accrc para guardar las computadoras entonces tendriamos más tiempo.
Recuerden que son casi 8 toneladas de equipos que nos insume un espacio de 8
pies de ancho, 40 pies de largo y 7 pies de alto. Si no pudieramos encontrar
algún lugar para guardarlas entonces necesitamos el dinero y embarcarlas en la
próxima semana o dos! 

	2. Dinero. No lo tenemos! Embarcarlas sólo desde Oakland a Buenos Aires cuesta
$2800. Con Ecuador como referente, suponemos que vamos a necesitar $3500 para
impuestos y otros. Además tenemos el envio desde Seattle a Portland $140, LA a
Oakland $250, y Portland a Oakland $200. Eso significa que necesitamos al menos
$7000 para cubrir el embarco del contenedor. Esto no incluye lo que nos podria
salir el recibir las máquinas en bolivia, chile, uruguay, rosario y el sur de
brasil. 
	Hemos aplicado para una donación como parte del Tactical Media Fund a Soros´s

OSI no nos han devuelto nuestra aplicación,asi que ni siquiera sabemos si

	Indymedia Argentina (Buenos Aires realmente), escribio una gran poetica carta
en español en la cual ell@s intentan y explican una visión de como quieren que
se junte dinero y como se lo maneje en la red. A mi entender lo que ell@s
dijeron es que quieren las computadoras pero no quieren que sean financiadas por
la OSI pues no les gusta quien es George Soros. A mi tampoco me gusta, pero
pienso que deberiamos tomar su dinero. Ell@s dijeron que traducirian la carta en
algunas semanas, si se les iba la gana.
	Dado el tiempo y dinero estamos perdidos. No se que tendriamos que hacer.

	3. Papeles / Aduanas. Mientras tanto Ernesto y Hendrix de Indymedia Rosario han
estado trabajando con Nodo Tau intentando encontrar la manera de recibir las
computadoras sin pagar impuestos. Sabemos que podemos listar las computadoras
como viejas y eso ayudara. Y nosotr@s vamos a escribir una carta de donación
desde ACCRC a Nodo Tau u alguna otra organización en Argentina. Pero hay todavia
cosas importantes no resueltas. No me siento para nada comfortable sabiendo
todos los pasos que tenemos que pasar para sacar el cargamento de la aduana. 

Dados estos problemas no estoy seguro que debemos hacer. Si tu puedes ayudar en
