ROGUE STATES
Creating media is one thing. Finding an audience for
it is another, it is easy to talk about creating our
own zines, websites, and whatever's but how can the
activist community actually get their message out
beyond the walls of activist circles? How are we going
to get our message across to an inundated public that
doesn't want to listen and isn't interested in
anything more than a sound bite?
Rogue States, the Media Circus reader, offers not only
an introductory guide to producing your own media but
extends the debate on the relationship between
grassroots organizations and the mainstream media.
Activist, minority, indigenous and alternative
community groups see a great need to secure accurate
representation in the mainstream, but at the same time
as we fight for this we also need to be producing our
own media and trying to reach as broad an audience as
possible with it.
Produced in only 6 short weeks Rogue States in itself
offers the inspiration for makers of independent media
and other activists to look beyond representation in
the mainstream and to strive to create, produce and
disseminate high quality, accessible independent
media.
Originally conceived as the program to accompany Media
Circus, an immerging annual event offering producers
and disseminators of independent media the opportunity
to come together and share ideas and techniques, Rogue
States stands on its own as a multifaceted voice of
the activist community. Loosely affiliated to the
Media Circus collective the 'The Rogue States Crew, a
non-hierarchical autonomous collective have brought
together a diverse collection of writing, art and
actions together with an long list of activist
contacts and websites to offer an interesting read and
a valuable sourcebook.
