Notes from IMC Mini Network Mtg
Sat 12th @ 142 Project, Hackney, London
Participants from london, cambridge, leeds/bradford, oxford, sydney ;)
SPACES:
Still no imc space.
London people have been looking for a joint large space to also accomodate
the one day thursday EFCR conference.
There is now a two week deadline to try and find such a space before imc
will split off and look for a venue just for itslef.
There are still some venues to check.
It was noted that several initiatives are underway for self organised /
autonomous spaces and indymedia is looking to support these in terms of
infrastructure - but that this will require a wider mobilisation if tech
and media ctivists than simply those already doing indymedia :)
RESOURCES:
Some good news...
imc people working on NOMAD project have spoken to computer aid
international to negotiate computers for NOMAD (approx 150+), as well as
boxes for imc media centre / polymedia hub type lab... (and indeed for
other esf projects) - they are supportince of imc and negotiations are
ongoing - the standard is PII, no operating system. Options for some
servers and scuzzy stuff. So, what is needed now is a shopping list ;) How
many boxes? What specs? What software to install etc Javier is current
contact - need to develop the list of what we need (tech folks get going!)
and someone other than javi should also be a laison.
Two sets of wireless crews - consume and free2air - have said verbally
they're up for helping with infrastructure :)
Satellite truck is being confirmed
Generator X sustainable power truck is being confirmed
People are sussing out the commedia media centre van and broadcast radio truck.
Also discussed idea of getting an actual indymedia vehicle (big bus or two
smaller vans?). Funding may be available. Could be used for esf, then to
support outreach tours and mobile reporting, then for the G8 in July 05.
Should ask who out of the uk network has experience of vehicles, are some
people in london we can ask for advice and practical help. But would need a
responsible crew and storage locations when not on the road. Seems there is
a large white panel van that is available NOW that we can start work on -
would need engine work however.
...with all of this together we could be very air mobile :)
A small group of tech types has also offered to help recondition and
install boxes and even help look after them during the days of the esf.
We decided that we need to put all this on a the indymedia esf wiki - as
well as creating a wishlist and task / role list for the actual esf period.
OUTREACH:
Several events attended recently in london (WTF and similar) to ask for
participation.
Discussions ongoing with self organised / autonomous spaces groups.
EFCR / Media Culture and Communications Rights Network to hold an outreach
event at LSE on 11th July
Links made to a few good people in Federation of Free Information
Infrastructure (sp?)
Need to start producing some more concrete calls for participation - both
for uk and for Europe.
It was felt that people would react more when a venue / space is confirmed
- but that with a developing list of resources and groups up for
participating going up on the wiki this would help.
IMC wiki needs to have an introduction page, as currently it's just our
organsing info which will be a bit confusing for people who are not already
involved.
Should also duplicate some of the info onto the esf2004.net - maybe create
a new section there under parallel projects calling it "Alt Tech Media"
rather than placing everything under 'indymedia' banner.
A new email list has just been created to facilitate communications and
planning around the whole set of alt tech and media projects - it was set
up as a non indymedia list to link different projects and work towards the
esf, as it was felt that lots of people will want to be involved but they
may not want to join indymedia: http://lists.riseup.net/www/info/mediamoot_esf
IMC NETWORK:
Need to start getting more concrete discussions and participation going -
especially as "THIS IS NOT A DRILL!" - ie uk network has never done
anything on this scale before, and there will be similar (and no doubt more
intense) demands on the network for the G8 in scotland next year in july...
Would be useful to get a laison from each local imc into the loop - a
contact point, also tasked with facilitating communications - forwarding
updates and requests to their local lists.
proposed: idea to have several meetings between now and esf:
1) irc feedback meeting and discussion - in a couple of weeks
2) irc decision making meeting - end of july
3) face to face meeting after that
4) proper full network meeting right at the start of september to do esf
and early G8 planning
