As promised here the notes from the Video/Radio meeting that was part of
the UK Network gathering in Sheffield last weekend (please add or correct
if anything is missing or wrong):

REPORTBACKS:

*Rome
Ben had been to Rome to attend a meeting concerning video activism. 40
people from all over the world were invited to gather and exchange ideas.
It was not intended to establish a new network, but to strengthen
existing projects. They talked about several projects:
-During the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) 10.-12.12. in
Geneva people are planning a global streaming project called “High Noon”,
which is also supposed to be projected during the event at the place
(www.geneva03.net/moin.cgi/HighNoon)
- “New Global Vision” (www.mediactivism.net/breve.php3?id_breve=1) new
ftp based online archive facility
- v2v (www.v2v.cc) is up and running and works!
It’s a peer to peer file sharing resource for global video exchange. It
works with the open source video codec VP3 – good quality format, but not
very widely used. Could be a good resource for involved people who know a
bit what they’re doing re codecs.

Another issue raised was about video files not being searchable, a
possible solution to that would be to attach metadata tags (?), that’s
something to be aware of and worked on.

Also mentioned was “Tapestry” – new software (?) to take away hierarchy
of editing and enable group editing.

*Cancun
A feature film and radio shows were produced during the events, despite
the difficulties of it being a temporary IMC there it seemed to have
worked well.

*London Arms Fair Protests (DSEI)
a good collaboration of video people resulted in a 20 min video that
should be distributed after the Anarchist Bookfair where it’s gonna be
screened and a 5min clip for European Newsreal.

VIDEO:

www.BeyondTV.org is about crossover between people interested in music
and other stuff, some sort of sister site to Indymedia. Aimed at people
who do screenings and to help video makers to get there stuff online etc.
There are some good help pages on www.beyondtv.org/training

www.cultureshop.org is an up and running website that distributes
independent media

European Newsreal (http://newsreal.indymedia.de/) is a compilation of
video shorts for screenings. It has been coming out monthly (9 issues)!
Mick needs help distributing it, tho (get in touch via list).
Ruffcuts is anotha CD based video short collection for screenings etc.
Hamish says: contribute and distribute (get in touch via list).

RADIO:

Indymedia Radio group London is broadcasting on the local radio FM
station Resonance every Wednesday from 1-2pm. Their shows are not London
specific so material could be used again. They can also give advice on
how to go about radio projects. Feedback and contributions always
welcome!
It was suggested that regional people should subscribe to the list
(http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-uk-radio)

A Bristol independent radio project was mentioned (can’t remember name)
Manchester has got one: under the pavement
(http://www.underthepavement.org/)

Apparently now is a good time to start up local radio projects. Help is
available from the community media association
(http://www.commedia.org.uk/).
At the end of November is a training in Manchester:

Twiki?
