not being informed enough in computer programming to answer this question
myself, is it possible that parts of the form could be sent to the mailing
list, and others to another area (a database, perhaps)? In other words,
could the phone number entries somehow be excluded from the new-imc
mailing list, but perhaps archived in some database (including all the
other information on the form)?
Phone numbers are important if we need to get in contact quickly-ish (for
example if the dns servers and the mailing list servers go down together).
And thus should be archived (perhaps at many locations). However, i do
agree with Tiffany's concern about the phone number being publically
accessible via google (especially if someone has an unlisted number). I'm
not one to promote the paranoid response of the "FBI/CIA is watching"
(though i'm sure they are, heh heh). I also figure that if the FBI/CIA
want to mess with somebody's phone, then they already have that
information available to them. It's the "general" public that concerns me
more. A friend of mine here in urbana illinois was inundated with
disturbing phone calls after she made an interesting statement against the
war. It's these types of phone calls that i would want to be able to
hinder from happening (at least from easily happening). and if joe (or
jane) shmoe (or shmane) wants to do such, but can't find yer phone number
anywhere except from a google search with a finding on the new-imc record,
then that's a problem. (i myself welcome phone calls, since i'm hardly
home anyways...however i suspect my roommates wouldn't be so delighted).
my two.nine cents.
