Hi Carl,
My name is Jay and I'm involved in the Philadelphia IMC. I'm also on the
new-imc working group, the group that helps aspiring IMCs like yours become
part of the Indymedia network. We're so glad you're interested in joining!
You have a long, exciting, sometimes frustrating but ultimately fulfilling
road ahead of you.
The new-imc working group (new-imc at indymedia.org) just received a copy of
the form you filled out on the web site to introduce yourselves to us.
Sounds like you're beginning from a decent place. I assume since you
filled out the form you have seen the "http://newimc.indymedia.org" web
site. That's where you'll find much of the the information you need to
learn about how to develop an IMC. The truth is, most of what the web site
says is that you have to do a lot of solid organizing work to form the
foundation of a good group.
As you indicate, El Paso is an excellent place for an IMC -- a border town,
where there are a variety of people who will benefit greatly from access to
independent media. You have a good start, getting support from members of
people involved in "third party" politics. As you know, an IMC must be
broad and can't be dominated by any one political point of view. From this
starting point, you can reach out to people from across economic, racial,
geographic and liguistic communities.
Take your time to familiarize yourselves with Indymedia and how things work
around here (or don't :). The next immediate step, once you've done some
more organizing, is to formulate a more complete "introduction essay" --
something to give us all at the new-imc working group know a bit more about
the group and what you plan to accomplish. That will help us get a sense
of what help we can give and when.
Let me and/or the new-imc working group know if you have any questions as
you proceed.
Jay
