Dear Jay Sand, Mark Pickens, IMC Mumbai, and Friends in the IMC Community:
Several of us who have been coordinating around setting up an
Independent Media Centre in Mumbai, including PUKAR, Comet Media
Foundation, and a group of students led by Sanjay Bhangar, have made
significant progress in the past two months. We have held several
meetings, have divided into smaller sub-groups to discuss
documentation projects, and are also recruiting students and
interested individuals to the IMC. We have set up an IndyMedia Bombay
list-serv at http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/listinfo/imc-mumbai
on which discussions are taking place about documentation projects.
In August 2002, as part of a series of student interactions called
the "PUKAR Monsoon", PUKAR will be hosting several presentations both
about the concept of IndyMedia and its relevance to the contemporary
media context in Bombay and India, as well as hosting several modules
related to documentation projects planned for the Bombay IMC on water
resources, the India-Pakistan conflict, street vendors in the city,
and slum demolitions. The PUKAR Monsoon will provide an opportunity
for our group to network with college students across the city,
building contacts and spreading the message of IndyMedia.
We submitted our initial mission statement to the New IMCs list in
mid-June, to which Jay Sand has responded enthusiastically. Shekhar
Krishnan, Coordinator of PUKAR, also visited Mark Pickens at the New
York IMC in June, and received a warm response and offers of
assistance from IMC New York to the fledgling IMC Mumbai.
What we require is some assistance, from techies and non-techies in
the IMC Community, is where to go from here. We are in the process of
responding to the Principles of Unity and the membership criteria,
which we hope to submit to the New IMCs list soon, along with
introductions of some of the core members of the IMC Mumbai. These we
will complete within a week, and submit them to the New IMCs list for
approval and listing.
What we are unclear about is how to establish the site, for which we
have already applied for a domain name. We would like to download a
standard template for the site, customise it for IMC Mumbai, and
upload it to an existing server space managed by PUKAR. We need help
with this process, both in terms of technical details and
requirements and guidance as to what our options are. We have a
software programmer who has been attending IMC Mumbai meetings who
can help us along at a later stage. How do we get the template for
the site, and what kind of software is required to upload and
maintain it?
Best
Shekhar Krishnan and Sanjay Bhangar
