Hi,
thanks for contacting us. I'm very glad you may be interested in launching
a Birmingham IMC
This is just a very brief response, with some suggestions for your further
pondering. Others will probably also respond. All IMCs are run by local
volunteer collectives, and usually share web technology resources with the
indymedia network. The process for becoming an IMC usually takes several
months, mostly involving organizing a group of people and working out
sustainability issues.. While the Seattle IMC has a downtown office, many
IMCs do not, or share offices with other organizations.
Here are some concrete steps to take:
1. form a local group to discuss the possibility of starting an IMC. Get an
email list. If your group is in it for the long haul, at some point you may
be able to get an imc-birmingham at indymedia list for organizing purposes.
2. Establish contact with other regional IMCs: Atlanta, Central Florida,
Chapel Hilll, Houston (I'm from NC so I do know how far those places
actually are from one another!) Review IMC list traffic of various IMCs at
http://lists.indymedia.org for an idea of the kind of issues dealt with by
indymedia volunteers on a day-to-day basis.
2. Review the new IMC information at
http://newimc.indymedia.org/ , which has more detailed information about
Once you know you want to go for it, submit a complete formal application
to the new IMCs group. Keep that group (cc'd on this email) apprised of
your progress.
good luck,
Jonathan
