Dear new-imc people,
Maybe someone else will give you an update in English on the IMC Fr
situation, but in short, IMHO, it's very similar to the Swiss
situation, plus the fact that the collective had sort of
split/dissolved/scattered and that although the reforming collective
was heading in the right direction, it did not manage to get up and
running and dealing with basic things like editorial policy,
separation of personal issues from indymedia issues, respect, trust,
etc. in time to cope with the equivalent of the Swiss precedent.
Here's red kitten's closure proposal:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-france/2002-June/003406.html
from Thurs evening which has not been blocked, so i've proposed a
deadline of
18:00 SUN 23 JUNE European Summer Time
16:00 SUN 23 JUNE GMT
for any final comments:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-france/2002-June/003422.html
Given that an activist association "SOS-Racisme" whose aims, in
principle, are to combat racism, but which seems to be linked to a
major political party in France, has threatened legal action as of Mon
24 June, and since we seem to have a consensus anyway, i would be
surprised if anyone thought blocking the proposal was worth it.
(The only reason why i'm cross-spamming :( is because of this urgency
and since it's a weekend...)
TECHNICAL DETAILS OF CLOSURE
mark, blicero, other techies, would you be able to help imc-france
people do the required changes once the 18:00 SUN 23 JUNE deadline has
passed (if it is not blocked on imc-france) ? i've cc-ed
imc-france-tech.
The main elements of closure, which so far seem to be consensed on,
are:
- closure of publish.php3 and the newswire
- removal of the newswire data base from public access
Something more radical (and IMHO not urgent) proposed is:
- deletion of the newswire data base
But the general appearance would remain the same and there would be
lots of central column stuff (like on the Swiss site) to explain the
situation, to explain to people the new-imc process ;) and to point
people to the existing mailing lists.
CHANGES TO CONTACT.PHP3 (after 18:00 SUN 23 JUNE if no block on imc-france)
There seems to be consensus for obvious changes to contact.php3:

ADD in the section "REQUESTED IMCs" [even though they haven't really
been requested yet, but we don't have a CONTACT MADE BUT NOT-YET
REQUESTED IMCs section and quite a few of the REQUESTED IMCs are not
quite requested yet, methinks...]

An afterthought, still for contact.php3: you should add in a link to
the closed (but informative) site, something like:
site en construction: http://france.indymedia.org
i'm sure noone would oppose this.
There's not yet a consensus on
(1a) removing france.indymedia.org from cities.inc
red kitten argued against:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-france/2002-June/003419.html
but i argued in favour:
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-france/2002-June/003422.html
because 1) people who already know the site won't forget the address,
and new web-surfers incapable of guessing the name don't really need
to be redirected to the site, and 2) it would make life more difficult
for new-imc to keep "restructuring sites" on cities.inc (it would also
be inconsistent given that prague accepted to be taken off while
restructuring, and would make it more difficult to make it clear which
sites have accepted status and which do not)
Maybe new-imc people could give their opinion on cities.inc
removal by replying to the imc-france list?
A possible compromise would be to keep the word "France" on
cities.inc, but have it point to contact.php3#france (if this in-page
link exists). But then the problem is that all sites under
reconstruction, or requested with existing sites, could insist that
they have the same treatment.
