Hi Bart,
First, our people decided that to change the name from IMC Turkey to IMC Istanbul, which was thought as the much more reliable in terms of covering a region: not whole country but only istanbul city. Also this will lead other possible intervenes from other cities of Turkey.

Two contact names are
- baris (it is me) yeldiren0 at hotmail.com
you can contact me especially about technical issues. Also I am online during all the day, so for urgent calls I will be more convenient than Barkin. (Because of politics of the country, I am not using my surname.)
- barkin karsli barkinkarsli at yahoo.com

We are working on a introductory, also for site homepage.
I will send it in a few days.

We are working with Scott Lewis for technical sources. He gave us a share on his server and nowadays we are taking some tests with the software.

I think It will be also OK in a few weeks.

thanks

  Baris,

Many thanks for sending in the documents. They look ok.
I'll start up internal approval process in the new-imc group (that's a period of 3 days; if no one disagrees you're internally approved by the new-imc working group).

However, there's still some things missing.
You hould write a short introduction about your imc. It enables people on the process list (which are from everywhere) to know at least a bit more about the application.
It would be cool if you could send a contactlist as well (may be addresses to mailinglists) or are the 2 addresses found below in your answers the list we should use ?

I don't know how you'll deal with the technical aspects of setting up a site, but if I remember well, I saw you were working with someone to get it set up together with the cyprus site ? is that ok ? if you need help please ask us, it's therefore we are on the list :-)).

  so, in short.
Once I get the introduction to IMC Turkey, I'll send the application to process list. If there is no dissent on that list within the first 7 days, you'll be offcially an IMC.

  Bart

    Hi Bart,
At least, I am sending the documents below.
Please check them if they are ok or not.
    thanks

    baris

    ----------------------------------
    Principles of Unity
    1. The Independent Media Center Network (IMCN) is based upon principles of
equality, decentralization and local autonomy. The IMCN is not derived from
a centralized bureaucratic process, but from the self-organization of
autonomous collectives that recognize the importance in developing a union
    of networks.

IMC Istanbul group, so far has argued a lot upon the above cited principles and is ok with them in general. To get a more comprehensive look you might have a look at our list archives (which are mainly in Turkish).

    2. All IMC's consider open exchange of and open access to information a
prerequisite to the building of a more free and just society.

Also we are ok with this principle/ideal.

[3. All IMC's respect the right of activists who choose not to be
    photographed or filmed.]

    This also is ok.

    4. All IMC's, based upon the trust of their contributors and readers, shall
utilize open web based publishing, allowing individuals, groups and
organizations to express their views, anonymously if desired. **see
appendix: Open Publishing document (still in proposal phase, at this
    address:
    http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-communication/2001-April/00170
    7.html)

We agree upon this proposal too. We also think that practice will tell more on how to progress.

    5. The IMC Network and all local IMC collectives shall be not-for-profit.

We are ok with this sin-quos-none, too.

    6. All IMC's recognize the importance of process to social change and are
committed to the development of non-hierarchical and anti-authoritarian
relationships, from interpersonal relationships to group dynamics.
Therefore, shall organize themselves collectively and be committed to the
principle of consensus decision making and the development of a [direct,
participatory democratic process] that is transparent to its membership.

Yes, in a way thats why IMCs are for we suppose.

    7. [All IMC's recognize that a prerequisite for participation in the
decision making process of each local group is the contribution of an
    individual's labor to the group.]

This is also a generally acceptet principle.

    8. All IMC's are committed to caring for one another and our respective
communities both collectively and as individuals and will promote the
sharing of resources including knowledge, skills and equipment.

Yes, this will help increase our frequency and energy.

    9. All IMC's shall be committed to the use of free source code, whenever
possible, in order to develop the digital infrastructure, and to increase
the independence of the network by not relying on proprietary software.

This is also a good must.

    10. All IMC's shall be committed to the principle of human equality, and
shall not discriminate, including discrimination based upon race, gender,
age, class or sexual orientation. Recognizing the vast cultural traditions
within the network, we are committed to building [diversity] within our
    localities.

    Then lets begin doing it!

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    IMC MEMBERSHIP CRITERIA - DRAFT
Each IMC and Global Working Group is expected to:

Agree in spirit to the NIMC Mission Statement and Principles of Unity,

      We do.

      b. Have a committed membership substantial enough to sustain a functional
      IMC,

Seemingly, we are ok with this, too.

      c. Have open and public meetings (no one group can have exclusionary
      "ownership" of an IMC),

We did this for a couple of times (in spite of hot summer); our next open meeting will supposedly take place in the first week of July; to give a better shape to what was accomplished so far.

      d. Work toward developing a local Mission Statement or Statement of Purpose.
Network Mission Statement may be adopted or used on an interim basis,

      We want and hope so.

      e. Establish and publish an editorial policy which is developed and
functions through democratic process, and with full transparency,

This we hope to have sent in June-2002.

      f. Agree to the use of Open Publishing as described in the NIMC Editorial
Policy [editorial collective comments: "We did agree that the term "Open
Publishing" was one that is still being defined by the Global Network
Collective, and we would wait and see what the results were before rewriting
      this criteria],

      We do.

      g. Adopt a decision-making policy that is in alignment with consensus
principles which include open, transparent and egalitarian processes,

We always work in this way.

      h. Have a spokesperson(s) willing and capable of participating in the global
decision-making process and meetings as a rotating liaison/representative,
with a clear understanding of the responsibilities that come with this role,

This can temporarily be Barkin Karsli ( barkinkarsli at yahoo.com ) .

      i. Participate in the key IMC Network Communication Methods that pertain to
the health and vitality of the Network and that contribute to the work of
the IMC. Assure that at least one person from your local IMC participates
at any given time on the IMC-Communications list,

This can temporarily be Baris ( yeldiren0 at hotmail.com )

      j. (NOT FINALIZED): Have no official affiliation with any political party,
state or candidate for office (comments: but individual producers have
freedom to do whatever they like and local IMCs can "feature" stories about
      various political parties and initiatives),

We understand the sensitivity on this and are not against this not-finalised-yet principle.

      k. IMCs shall in no way engage in commercial for-profit enterprises. [We
could add: The IMCN is committed to the decommercialization of information
and will disassociate from any local IMC that decides to become a for profit
      media corporation.]

      Yes.

      l. Display a 3local version2 of the IMC 3i2 logo on your website and
      literature.

This will hopefully be as soon as these bureaucratic processes do finish.

      m. Include the IMC Network current 3Cities List2 on your site, preferably on
      the front page.

      Yes.

      NETWORK MEMBERSHIP
      1. Network Membership is open to any group that accepts the above
criteria for membership. In the case of several requests from the same city
or region, we will encourage them to meet and work together.

      Yes.

      2. Network Membership in the NIMC will be confirmed by the New IMC
Working Group, which is accountable to IMC-Process and ultimately to the
      NIMC decision-making process.

      Yes.
