This is mail that I just got, I hope that someone can figure out where the miscommunication is going on here:

Quoting Geoffrey Young <DOWNITGOES at ANTISOCIAL.COM>:

well what do they have to do to get through all of this "process" ive read
the pertinent pages and for some reason this is still not clear in my mind.
we ahve already had several meetings, doled out responsibilities as
instructed re:mailing list members, organizational contact etc. this was at
first me and i am only fulfilling that role until the site is up and
running.
we are planning infosessions which will turn into various working groups.
im going on ckuw this sunday to talk it up. (U of Wpg radio)
how long does this "process" have to take?
ive sort of been bounced all over tha place and have had trouble getting
answers, or, in some cases responses whatsoever. i have been told that you
are probably not the person to talk to but i guess you are. yer probably
the ninety millionth person and ive already been sent to you once.
planning for the summit is already starting in the city and winnipeg is in
bad need of the resources capable of bringing all the folks together.
i believe the same sort of problems also dogged the zimbabwe folks, but
thats a whole other basket (which can be found at zimbabwe.syntac.net).
ive been on the new imc list for a couple of months and am also on the
process list.
help!
thanks
geoffrey

Sorry Geoffrey,

The last that I heard from you was that there was going to be a meeting, and that the application would be posted on the following Sunday or Monday, and then all the sudden, you've declared yourself approved! I understand that your in a rush, but going 'over our heads' likely won't work, because it was tech that asked people in the network to create this process.

This is what ThunderBays application looked like, you might have seen it, and several like, it over the last couple of months. In order to help you 'fast track' your application I suggested that you use the global editorial and mission statements, as this is the most time consuming dialogue that each new IMC seems to have, the rest is quite straight forward:

Hey new-imc folks, IMC Thunder Bay is proud to announce that we will be ready to go online
by the end of the week. I think you'll find that we've gone through all of the appropriate steps
to achieve membership in the NIMC.
Our group formed in September, imc mailing list attained Nov. 8th, 2001.
We sent in our introduction letter to the new-imc list in early
November:
(http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/new-imc/2001-November/002407.html) Does imc-thunderbay meet the membership criteria? a. we agree to the NIMC principles on unity
(http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-thunderbay/2001-November/000056.html)
b. we have exceptionally committed and consistent membership - the last
4 meetings have had normally between 12 and 20 attendees - have never
had a meeting with less that 6 in attendance
c. meetings are open and public
d. we have a solidified mission and goals
(http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-thunderbay/2002-January/000090.html;
http://lists.indymedia.org/mailman/public/imc-thunderbay/2002-January/000113.html)
e. democratically established an editorial policy: "IMC Thunder Bay General [news wire] Editorial Policy: I. All hidden content will be prefaced by a description of why it is hidden. II. We will hide unsubstantiated, oppressive, hateful, racist, fascist,
xenophobic, sexist content, or any other content that is considered by the
editorial collective to be contrary to the objective of human equality.
Exception to this rule will be made in the case of substantiated content in
the comments section following the questionable article. In this case, it
is mandatory for the editorial collective to indicate that this is the
reason the article has not been hidden. III. We will hide all articles which are personally or product promotional
in nature. IV. We will hide all articles which are obviously non-factual or misleading,
excluding satire, provided it does not violate our other editorial policies. V. We will hide all articles which are re-posted or text that was originally
a comment posted as a report." IMC Thunder Bay Features Editorial Policy: - local issues will take top priority over everything else followed by
regional, national, international events. National and international
issues that link broader issues with local concerns will take priority
over other national/international news.
- stories which stress community participation emphasized
- content which facilitates a voice for marginalized peoples, issues and perspectives
in accordance with the principles of unity.
- content with environmental, labour, class, aboriginal, social justice, arts and
culture, gender, race, Northern issues (Thunder Bay representing the
Provincial North, characterized by the hinterland relationship with the
south, boom and bust, resource based economy) will be given precedent
- strive to educate the public, raising awareness, empowering the community
- stories in global solidarity with similar visions stressed
- those which provide historical perspective, remembering and learning from past struggles
- focusing a critical eye on the media is key f. we agree whole-heartedly to the use of 'open publishing'
g. we use consensus-based decision making with rotating facilitation of
meetings
h. we have at least two spokespeople willing and capable of
participating in the global decision-making process and meetings as
rotating liaisons/representatives, both with a clear understanding of
the responsibilities that come with this role. We have members that
have participated in the construction of other IMC's and who have
attended 3 IMC media convergence events (2 in Alberta, 1 in Quebec
City). We are also in reasonably good communication with other imc's in
Canada (Alberta, Quebec, Ontario) and the some in the U.S. (i.e.. San
Francisco, Houston).
i. we have been participating in the NIMC communications system on the
tech, sf-tech, sf-tech irc, new-imc lists, as well as have good
communications on our own list. We hope to improve on this as we mature
as an organisation.
j. as an IMC we have no organisational affiliation with any political
party, candidate, or state.
k. imc-thunder bay is not-for-profit and interested in free information
l. we are displaying the ((i)) logo on our site
m. the links to the rest of the IMC network is displayed on our site. Other reasons we're ready to go:
1. With the assistance of the San Francisco IMC, we have a test site up
and running at: http://thunderbay.sfimc.net./ using the sf-active code.
We're working hard on this. We're putting up local features on
Saturday and are revamping all site-text by Sunday. By Sunday night the
site should be finished.
2. San Francisco IMC has stated they will host our site on their server
(on a better server than our site is on currently) until we can get our
own server up and running in the future.
3. Last Saturday night we held an IMC fundraiser to spread the word and
gather money for a space. Raised almost $600 in one night. Two hundred
people showed up. The people of Thunder Bay (pop. 130,000) really want
an IMC.
4. Momentum behind the project is unreal. Activism is truely on the
rise here. Actions, including occupations, are happening at various
places in the city this week and next. There are currently three major
strikes on here. We worry that a long delay in going online may cost
some of the human energy in our place. The time is now.
5. We have a prepared outreach letter which is going out to all labour,
environment, First Nations, and social justice groups as soon as the
site is up. View it here:
)
6. We have tons (that's metric tonnes - he he) of equipment and a
membership that knows how to use it.
7. We have an IMC bank account at the local credit union.
8. We're getting a P.O. box soon.
9. We have a symbiotic relationship with a local fully-independent,
non-profit 'print' magazine (that runs using most of the NIMC princples)
and are considering our own print publication.
10. We will be fielding an IMC Thunder Bay crew at the G- 8 in Alberta
this spring.
11. We may have access to a free space in town, possibly shared with
environmental and social justice groups.
12. No matter what, part of our plan is to have a space to facilitate
media participation for everyone.
13. We are working on putting IMC workstations in shelters, food banks,
and community resource spaces. So, as you can see, we're organised and ready to become the media in our
community. We are hoping for the domain thunderbay.indymedia.org and
are excited to see Thunder Bay on the list of Canadian IMCs on the network. So, is there anything else you need from us? Yours in solidarity,
the folks at Thunder Bay Indymedia For the record...
