[New-imc] working group?

hi bart and all the new imc people,
thanks bart for the initiative and the work to clean up the list and
having us all introduce each other. it makes a big difference and
feels good to "see" all these folks from all over on this list. it
would be nice too to see where each person is from on the list
without having to go to the link. just to see if we have any gaping
holes in terms of who is here, etc. this is a huge improvement
though. thanks again bart!
working group:
in the beginning of setting up this list, we talked about this list
being a working group, as distinct from a discussion list which is
how many of the other lists operate. the communication list was just
a general list and so we created commwork list which is really a
working group list and i really appreciate the difference. what that
means for this list is we wanted people who joined this list to
actually help and share the collective responsibilities. there are
many ways to do this as you can imagine if you are paying attention
at all :))). if people couldn't or didn't want to, then perhaps they
could watch things on this list by going to the list archives.
this has been controversial when brought up on other lists, and i'm
not sure why. but i think it just means people are wanting to have a
solid group of people, not just a few people, who all work together.
that's the ideal. what has happened on this list is that a handful
of people have done the majority of work. which is often the case in
indymedia network, perhaps cause many people don't realize how much
work it takes to keep things moving in the best way possible. alot
of the complaints and criticisms i hear usually could be solved with
some solutions that have already been proposed in many places (i have
a list of proposals over time that's out of date but points out how
many good ideas we have for how to improve things). the problem is
those solutions usually involve time, create energy, work, often
collective work, other resources. to many people, alot of that work
remains invisible.
by changing the dynamic on a few of the lists where work is going on,
perhaps we can change the dynamic throughout and build awareness of
the work that is involved.
i just hope that this list will be more of a working group with a
solid group of people who want to help out because it will help us
collectively achieve more of what we'd like to see across the
network. i think people associate decentralization to "there's not
as much to do on the network level". i've heard people say that.
the assumption is all the work is at the local level. but that is
not reality nor is it the ideal. because you forget that the other
part of the phrase "decentralized network" is the word network and
that implies connection, coordination, collaboration, communication,
and more.
documenting who we are:
before this list was started about 10 months ago or so, there were
discussions on other lists about coordinating the things that needed
to be done, and using a giant "to do" list for the network to help
organize all the various tasks we had. and we even put together some
good lists of things. in that way others who were less involved
could see how much work goes into keeping things flowing well, and
learn how they can plug in, seeing what had been done before. which
is key and something we as a social and digital network haven't done
very well. even in seattle we have problems with this - helping
people plug in -- and i've heard it echoed in many places.
i think one part of the problem at the systemic level is that we lack
documentation of our processes and the tasks that need to be done and
a kind of history of the organization. oh we have it, in chunks and
bits of pieces here and there and it's more consoldiated in some
places, but this "imc documentation project" as i like to call it is
about institutional memory and that makes it easier for us not to
reinvent the wheel, to share what has been done better with new imcs
and enables new people to find a way to get involved.
todo.indymedia.org:
todo.indymedia.org was created for the tech collective, but it was
expanded thanks to the work of a few folks to include the other areas
in the network. one good thing about this process is that it asks us
to document our process and asks people to be accountable for what
they say they are going to do. just makes collective process a bit
more organized and clear. so things don't fall through the cracks.
perhaps we could try it, but it may not be necessary for this list
cause we're relatively organized and have a solid core of committed
folks. i point it out because there are tasks that each list needs
to take on - like roll calls, doing regular list summaries. this
list has other tasks and responsibilities that are also necessary.
i'd really like to ask if there are others who are interested in
helping out with concrete tasks on this list. susan has offered to
help with the new imc page draft i sent earlier. that's awesome
susan.
there's something about working in a group (list) and feeling like
alot of people don't say anything ever and yet they are there. to
me, personally, that doesn't feel comfortable. perhaps with this
roll call and with unsubscribing people who didn't bother to go
through the roll call we will have changed that dynamic.
to me a working group is more about a group of people you can rely
on, call on, talk to, share tasks and ideas and feel supported by.
that to me is what we need on this list and the other lists where
alot of work happens.
this is something i've said before, but since we're in the process of
changing this list with this roll call, i felt the need to share it
again.
thanks
